Re: Wheels 1 - Wire brush on alloy rims..

Some people just need for the wheel to be somewhat round and for the tire to hold air, more or less. :|

When was that video made? It looks dated, and looks like it was recorded on a tape vidcam....

Re: Wheels 1 - Wire brush on alloy rims..

New pics posted. They will be smooth and clean.

See my previous comment. It depends what they have to do...

Re: Wheels 1 - Wire brush on alloy rims..

I am assuming that is a chain, and I am not familiar with it.

You can ask about the weights and use of sealer.

They might insist you pay them more. :D

Re: Wheels 1 - Wire brush on alloy rims..

You assumed right. But I was also, for some reason, speaking to the more usual case where an installer is doing the work. He ain't gonna polish anything...

To be fair, they are only getting...

Re: Wheels 1 - Wire brush on alloy rims..

I finished cleaning and sanding the wheel bead area.

I roughed up and got the old loose paint off of the front of the wheels. It does not have to be too smooth because I am just brushing on...

Re: Wheels 1 - Wire brush on alloy rims..

Pics attached here of the blob of JB Kwik I applied, that same blob after I sanded it down, and a pic of the bent rim after I straightened it a little.

Re: Wheels 1 - Wire brush on alloy rims..

The rim shown above with the sealant on it (the one that leaked) had sticky weights put on it when the tire was new, years ago. A few weeks after that, I (luckily) had the wheel off for something,...

Re: Wheels 1 - Wire brush on alloy rims..

My sense is that a steel wire brush on a drill or similar would be too rough for an aluminum wheel. The professional guides that I've seen on this support this.

I am not sure how involved...

Re: Wheels 1 - Wire brush on alloy rims..

If I understand you correctly.... it has been a long time since I've seen tires manually mounted.

While true, my understanding is that it is of particular concern in the rust belt. That is,...

Re: Wheels 1 - Wire brush on alloy rims..

Too late :D. Already attempted to straighten, do not see any problems.

I knew that cracking/damage was a possibility. OTOH, I did not want any problems with the tire installation.

The...

Re: Wheels 1 - Wire brush on alloy rims..

I had concerns about this. The sad part is that I bet many tire installers would not hesitate... :snide:

I am not a tire expert, but my understanding is that it has its place and its...

Re: Wheels 1 - Wire brush on alloy rims..

Further pics of the wheels, front and back. The fronts were done with duplicolor primer, wheel paint and clear coat years ago. Looked great at the time, but did not really hold up.

I noticed...

Re: Wheels 1 - Wire brush on alloy rims..

Except that there is probably also some "fix-a-flat" sealant present.

Pic attached. The one on the left was the one that had an inside rim leak and sealant.

I worked with a generic green dish...

Wheels 1 - Wire brush on alloy rims..

I should know this, but I am confused right now.

I have the tires off two of my alloy wheels. I want to run a wire brush attachment on a drill around the insides of the rims, on the tire mating...

Watch this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-542IYGBbpg) regarding dielectric grease and its application.

Re: Considering re-ring...

That appears to be an "Evergreen" Timing Set. Any experience with it? ANyone?

A search of their store yields no other parts for my car....

Re: Considering re-ring...

I've put in a query for the the ring materials.

If I understand you.... I won't be buying a kit, I will be buying components separately. Ring Set, bearings, head gasket/bolts, timing, etc.

Re: Considering re-ring...

Are the Hastings rings of a different material than the Enginetech?

I likely would just place an order off RockAuto..

Appreciated, but again, would not be worth it. This is not a proper...

Re: Considering re-ring...

OK, thanks.

And it wouldn't necessarily be a matter of "incorrect" information, but that better options/information have developed.

Perhaps another reason to go with the enginetech rings,...

Re: Considering re-ring...

Nope.

Thanks for the feedback. Did you replace timing and what brand did you use?

"run great and no smoke" is encouraging, but have you done enough miles to gauge oil consumption? I...

Re: Considering re-ring...

????

I had the head off about 5 years ago. Cylinder tops and valve faces were heavily carboned, if that is what you mean.

My goal is to use acceptable quality rings and hone properly. ...

Re: Considering re-ring...

You are looking at this as a proper rebuild. It is not.

I plan to check for ridge, hone and replace rings. If the bore is off, it is irrelevant, since I am not going to do anything about it. ...

Re: Considering re-ring...

I'm not getting this.

Work is being done because oil control rings are (and have been) likely gunked tight.

Forgot to mention, compression test was good at 195-210. I think that means I can...

Re: Considering re-ring...

As stated, in car.

Good to hear. How many miles on it? Did you hone and replace with standard size rings, or did you bore it out?

I am not going to buy new pistons, and I likely lack...
