Re: Head shave timing retarding a myth?

Seems fairly close to expected. Just shy of 19 degrees at the crank when moving the cams 1 tooth. No doubt quality of tools and equipment play a role, and it has to be much more precise than it...

Re: Most horrid sound ever!

The fact that nobody hears the noise from the outside might lead me to think that it's not as horrible as suspected, but rather a sound being transmitted through to the cab mostly. I was thinking...

Re: Head shave timing retarding a myth?

First let me fix the red above. Obviously the chain length stays the same. The cams rotate as the tensioner takes up the slack created, thus the timing change.

.... and back to the questions at...

Re: Head shave timing retarding a myth?

I've never taken any interest in the S Series numbers, but I haven't seen anything other than guesses to the numbers either.

To find out, you have to know the cam sprocket diameter.

Then...

Re: Whats your MPG?

That doesn't sound out of line. With the temps being up where they have been in much of the country, just staying alive in the car trumps MPG return. All highway isn't that terrible, but in stop...

Re: Greasing shifter...

That's what I've used. You could probably use the heavier stuff if you want since the area is protected from the worst dust and crap.

Re: Transmission Clunking Between Gears

From the two videos, I think you have a CV/driveline issue. In the one with all the shifting with the clutch in, I'm just hearing the usual mechanical noises of the shifter and shift tower, but no...

Re: Idle issues

The first thing I'd do is block the EGR, and check out the battery voltages both off and running (if you can get a decent idle running). Any leaks can wreak havoc on the idle, which in turn is...

Re: 2002 sl2 reservoir boils over at 1/2 way mark

In addition to confirming the above, check the line that dumps into the back of the coolant reservoir. They can get clogged and will often impact cooling. I'd suspect the cap more myself, but you...

Re: A new twist on an old favorite: Hesitation AFTER replacing ECTS

That photo is my '95 SL1 as it was delivered from the factory, and I can confirm nobody had swapped anything. It sounds like you either have sensors that have been swapped, or they were plugged in...

Re: Coolant leak by rear left tire???

That was my thought as well, especially if the OP uses a red coolant.

In any case, that's a long way for the coolant to run back down the car, so it shouldn't happen (at least quickly)...

Re: Transmission Clunking Between Gears

The bolded would lead me to think it's not the clutch and most likely not the transmission. But it's a strange symptom as you describe it, so it might make sense to put the car on stands and see if...

Re: Replacing coolant, distilled water, tank overflows

All I can say at this point is that some of you have been much more kind in your responses that I probably would have been able to do.

I was busy trying to get in touch with the F1 team engineers...

Re: Replacing coolant, distilled water, tank overflows

Just put the cap on when you're doing it. Otherwise with no pressure the water exceeds the boiling point and overflows. There is no harm running the straight water as long as you have the cap on....

Re: transmission fluid change on 2002 SL2 automatic

Great point missed by all of us others. They put the wrong stuff in, they should get the wrong stuff out. The OP might as well get the benefit of the flushing of the DEX VI fluid, regardless of...

Re: transmission fluid change on 2002 SL2 automatic

I recall posts stating similar and IIRC at least one member used the Dex VI for 15-20,000 miles before realizing it wasn't intended for S Series cars.

I've also seen evidence that at least in some...

Re: Extremely Poor Gas Mileage 1995 SW2 Auto

Years ago on a truck forum I frequented the signature line bets came to be. Some was just all in fun (sports bets, racing, etc) but then many of us realized how much it helped in the discussion...

Re: Oil change - Added too much...drain some?

I'd just drain a little off.

Some of the owners manuals say you can be above the F mark by IIRC an 1/8 in or so on the dipstick, but maybe someone else can confirm that. But if you get overfull...

Re: Cleaning ignition coil pack?

I personally tend to think that people over think coils. They are a fairly simple device. There are always camps that say go with OEM as they are superior.... but they are replacing broken superior...

Re: Cleaning ignition coil pack?

Often ignition related misses like that will take place more when at temp, and often under certain load conditions.

Once the coil packs are clean, make sure you don't get any dielectric or...

Re: Extremely Poor Gas Mileage 1995 SW2 Auto

I'm well aware of how that works. That is why such proof is available to anyone on the thread that asks. No cost to others, but in your case the cost is your signature line. Since you constantly...

Re: Extremely Poor Gas Mileage 1995 SW2 Auto

Bah!

What would a couple factory trained techs and a guy with an electronics background possibly know? :dizzy:

I actually already have a video I took in December of me doing it. I mention...

Re: 1996SL11.9L's 2002 SL1

Hard to argue with that. On my car that last quarter of a tank is usually 100+ miles. With your MPG return even better.

Any idea of your highest miles fill on a single tank of gas?
