Hello, quick intro

DIY mechanic all out life, owned a Saturn when I was younger, brand new 2000 S series, ( don't remember details) never had to work on it back then.

But I just bought a 96 SC2 that needs some TLC, and help.
The guy I bought it from said it had a cracked head and sprayed oil all over on the exhaust side right by cylinder 1.

So I've got the car, checkout some compatibility list for the heads and will be picking up one from my local salvage yard soon.

I do have a quick question as I have found before Chilton and Haynes sometimes are not... accurate.

What are the torque specs (in ft lbs please) for the head bolts and valve cover bolts?

I fear with an aluminum block of stripping something.

Thanks!

Looking forward to this project.

You may have already found an answer to your question regarding the needed torque specs, but I'll try to check the Chilton Professional Repair Manuals at my local library and reply here anyway.

The torque values are as follows for the 1.9L DOHC:

Cylinder head to block (when re-using cylinder head bolts): 37 ft. lbs/50 Nm. "Install Snap-on Tool 360 or equivalent torque angle gauge and calibrate the gauge to 0, then tighten each culinder head bolt an additional 90 degrees, in sequence." (When using new cylinder head bolts additional steps are required.)

Cylinder head torque sequence:
Intake side
8 4 1 5 9

7 3 2 6 10
Exhaust side
_____________________________________________

Cam cover to cylinder head: "In proper sequence to 89 inch lbs./10 Nm." (sequence not described)

If you'd like to see the full head replacement information send me a p/m with an email address and I will send it to you.
