Did Buick's SUV Announcement Hint at New Powertrain Options for the 2011 Saturn Vue?

A new story entry has been added:

[drupal=3234]Did Buick’s SUV Announcement Hint at New Powertrain Options for the 2011 Saturn Vue?[/drupal]
Last week General Motors announced Buick would begin selling a new compact crossover in 2010. Later in 2011, the vehicle will feature the company's state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid technology. The Buick will be launched with two of fuel-efficient direct-injected gasoline engines: Ecotec 2.4L direct-injected four-cylinder engine with an optional 3.0L direct-injected V6. GM says the 2.4L will deliver 30 miles per gallon or more on the highway, a modest statement since the redesigned and just released 2010 Chevrolet Equinox with the same powertrain earned a 32 mpg rating by the EPA.
"The new five-passenger crossover will build on the success of the Buick Enclave, offering the brand's finely crafted execution and premium driving experience in a fuel-efficient package."

Buick's finely crafted execution? The Equinox, Vue, Terrain, and this all come off the same assembly line. This is just more of the "old GM" talking.

Unless GM and Penske obtains a good relationship, I doubt that there will be a GM sourced VUE in 2011. The 2011 VUE may be on a Nissan/Renault/Samsung platform.

Re: Did Buick's SUV Announcement Hint at New Powertrain Options for the 2011 Saturn V

So, let me get this straight. GM makes this Buick that is less fuel efficent than the Chevy. But with a better build quality. (I assume it costs more too.)

Why on earth can't a Buick have BETTER fuel economy and be built well, and priced well?? Oh yeah, that is how GM continues to shoot itself in the foot.

I predict that the saturn will be the same (w/o upgrades) until it is gone. ala ION, S-series, L-series, sky, and relay. Did anyone see great improvements in the last model year of those cars? I didn't.
Please don't get your hopes up.

Re: Did Buick's SUV Announcement Hint at New Powertrain Options for the 2011 Saturn V

It sounds like GM is slotting the Buick Vue to consume the excess build capacity of the Mexico plant. Just how much excess capacity it will have depends on Penske and his plans for the Saturn Vue.

It do not see why Penske would not want in on a plug-in Vue or access to a refreshed Vue with DI engines. The alternative is a 100% distribution and supply change to source a small SUV from a different manufacture.

It will be interesting to see what the future product plans are once the deal with GM is completed. I expect at least one or two of the current offerings to be extended via a GM sourcing agreement past the currently announced time frame, just do not know which ones.

Sourcing a new small car and replacing all three of the soldiers left standing by 2011 would be a very large pill to swallow for a lean, mean, costs to the bone Penske Saturn.

Your thinking may be correct but your facts are off...the Vue is built by GM in Mexico, the Equinox & Terrain are built in Canada by CAMI...

Where will the new Buick be built? It will come off one of those two lines, either of which will certainly not be dedicated to Buick alone.

This isn't really that new ... the 2010 Equinox gets the same DI engines. Between the Chevy & Buick, it makes sense for the Buick to get the plug-in first.

As for Saturn getting this, why would GM provide this limited-availability technology to an outside company? Not gonna happen.

The Equinox appears it will be what the Vue should have been. The Terrain, on the other hand, may share the same under-pinnings, but it is so ugly, it looks like it could have come from the Chrysler styling reject bin ... expect a refresh in a couple of years to fix the sheet metal or look for it to be dropped.

We use to build 3 in the plant... the XL7, which has stoppped production.
there is much room inside that plant to build another vehicle.....

But with nox and Terrain, yes it is very busy in the plant....But whats one more,lol..... The Toyota plant is just down the road 30 mins making the Rav4

Serisguy: Where abouts are you located? just wondering for the sales of the new Nox...Thanks

Re: Did Buick's SUV Announcement Hint at New Powertrain Options for the 2011 Saturn V

Lots of new Nox'es sitting at the local dealer here. Haven't seen any on the road. The way GM is advertising and discounting the old Nox models, I'm sure they're not interested in putting any incentives on the new ones yet.
I had a look at the interior of the '10 model. The front cabin was impressive. What I couldn't understand is why, when the rear side windows run to the hatch opening, do they block off the vision with a solid panel. The glass goes to the back, why doesn't the view?

Interesting. I wonder why the New GM didn't give more thought to this before canceling it. It doesn't make them look too business savvy.

Re: Did Buick's SUV Announcement Hint at New Powertrain Options for the 2011 Saturn V

GM cancelled this platform effective today. They said it was not "upscale enough" for Buick's customers. GM said this shows they can react fast in today's marketplace.

Here is the article: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?p...d=a7YkUJP_iGwM

"Aug. 19 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Co. said it canceled plans for a new Buick sport-utility vehicle announced Aug. 6 after potential customers said the model lacked the “premium characteristics” they expect from the brand.

The decision was made Aug. 14, after GM earlier in the week showed the SUV and other future vehicles to consumers, dealers, employees, analysts and news reporters, Vice Chairman Tom Stephens said on a company blog. The plans for the SUV called for a plug-in hybrid version, which also was canceled, he wrote.

The speed of the cancellation shows that the largest U.S. automaker since emerging from bankruptcy in July “is listening and moving quickly,” Stephens wrote. Chief Executive Officer Fritz Henderson has said he wants to transform GM to be more responsive to customers and make speedier decisions."

To me, this shows a knee-jerk approach to doing business. Which potential customers did GM sample this to? The over 60-70 year old sect that currently buy Buicks, and who are dying off as a customer base? Or the 30-50 year olds (current Pontiac and Saturn owners) who might consider a Buick in their future. My guess is that GM could not pattern a sample audience for the future if their business depended on it. It may not be your father's Oldsmobile, but it apparently IS your grandfather's Buick...

the plug on a new technology model really looks like the 'old GM' is still in charge. Applying a Buick badge to an Opel and attempting to get a premium price was among the 'Saturn mistakes' GM said they had learned from. Apparently a remedial class is in order.

Attaining the fuel economy goals for 2016 was going to be difficult for the Buick line even with the plug-in SUV. Without a small car or SUV other divisions are going to have to work harder to keep Buick afloat.

Perhaps Roger Penske can save GM by taking plug-in vues off thier hands at a substantial discount...
