Re: Saturn ASTRA reliability (please sign up if you own one)

I am currently contemplating the purchase of 2008-2009 Astra and stumbled upon this forum.
So, you lucky owners of Astra, any regrets? Would you buy this model again?
I like how this car looks and drives but reliability is the main concern. Does it make sense to buy a 5-6 year old?

I've had mine for 4 1/2 years now and have not had to have any work done on it at all. I bought it basically new from CarMax in Sept. 2009 with 300 miles on it. It turned over 80,000 miles on Monday and I have not had to repair anything yet. It starts right up, even when it is almost 20 below out, handles great and is a very comfortable commuting car. Mine is a Silver 3-door with a manual transmission, the optional 18 inch wheels and the upgraded stereo. The car handles snow and rain very well and the stability control is not nearly as obtrusive as it is on most US spec cars. So far I am averaging 32.7 mpg despite a lot of AC use during the hot humid summers that we have had the last three years. I did have one of the parking brake cables stick last winter when it got cold so I will need to pull it off and replace or lubricate it this summer, but that has been it. It still runs like new, I see no reason that it shouldn't get another 100k miles on it before having any issues.

Our reliability stats for the ASTRA now include owner experiences through March 31, 2014, making them nearly a year ahead of other sources.

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2008 ASTRA: 50, moderate

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds", to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

2008 ASTRA: 55, < 1

Thank you, once again, everyone who has been helping. Next update in August.

Any chance you'll provide stats on the 2009's? I've been contributing for about 5 years now...how many more owners do you need to publish stats on this model year?

Re: Saturn ASTRA reliability (please sign up if you own one)

Should probably just combine the data it was essentally the same car from year to year right?

Re: Saturn ASTRA reliability (please sign up if you own one)

Thanks for asking about the 2009s--I'd forgotten about this wrinkle myself. We already combine model years for the Astra. 2009s are included in the 2008 stat. We have only a few of them, but over 100 of the 2008s (though many members have been replacing them). More always helpful.

Our reliability stats for the ASTRA now cover the year ending June 30, 2015.

Repair trips per 100 cars:

2008 ASTRA: 49, low

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds", to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

2008 ASTRA: 68, < 1

Re: Saturn ASTRA reliability (please sign up if you own one)

Got one of these earlier this week.

This is Saturn #3 for me. I had 2 S-Series' in the past. I just came upon this one too - originally, I was looking for a Honda. This one is 53k, manual, silver, 3 door...CDC40. I am digging it so far.

InSP light is on though. I was reading in the manual about that - sounds like I will have call the dealer tomorrow.

Took it out on come country Oregon roads today though. It is super peppy and fun to drive. It sounds very nice, as well. This will be fun to take to the coast.

I will now cruise the threads for some links to good cup holders and cell phone cradles.

Re: Saturn ASTRA reliability (please sign up if you own one)

INSP is not the check engine light.. Rather it is just the oil life monitor. The instructions to reset it are incorrect in the manual so chances are they never did it after their oil changes. CHeck the astra section for the proper instructions.

This is not a reply but a new posting re. Astra. My Astra (Manual Tran.) whirrs when shifting. Could be a bad throw-out bearing?
