Random Clutch Pressure Problem

I have a 2000 Saturn SL1 that we drive occasionally. On 2 different occasions, we have driven it somewhere without issue. This issue has happened twice now out of 50 trips. (The other 48 trips did nt have any issues.) When we returned to the car, the clutch had no pressure, the car would start but would not go into gear. Eventually, it would start, the clutch would have pressure and run fine. The fluid is full. Any ideas?

Re: Random Clutch Pressure Problem

No resistance to pushing in the clutch pedal, correct? That is almost certainly a bad master cylinder.

Correct. It has only happened twice. I was afraid it might be the master cylinder. Sounds like that replacement is labor intensive. Thanks for the information.

It actually isn't too bad. If you are even somewhat mechanically inclined I suggest doing it yourself. Just buy the master and slave cylinder ASSEMBLY for ~$100 (much easier to install the whole thing and also gets the possibility of the slave going out down the road). The only things you need to get out of the way is the airbox, battery tray, and the PCM. Literally maybe like 10 bolts you have to undo. I did it myself just last week and it took maybe an hour for the install.

Or, buy a new sealed assembly for $30.

Keep in mind this system can become permanently air bound right out of the box. They require special handling or you will have an uncorrectable failure.

Thank you all for the advice. It sounds like a task I may try to tackle on my own now. Our Saturn is an extra vehicle for us. It's always nice to have a dependable backup car around. Hope you all have a great week!

That explains why this post was on that thread, looks like hholbein followed the link and post his response to this thread on that one by accident :)

[QUOTE=hholbein;2306734]Here's a Richpin video on the removal/replacement steps:
