How to drain the gas out of Saturn sl

I am thinking about buying a Saturn that has sat for a year and a half. At this point I don't trust the gas. Should I try and siphon it out or is there a better way?

Thanks
Rick

I think I would pop the line off the fuel filter. Mine is a 99, and my filter is underneath near the tank.

There is a siphon trap is some years. If you part with the year then someone can tell you how to drain it BUT pumping the tank completely dry can finish off the fuel pump. Generally just dump in 5 gallons of 91 octane no alcohol gas and drive it.

Re: How to drain the gas out of Saturn sl

1-Update your profile so no one has to ask what you're driving. Then post any other info that relates to the problem.

2-You can always try starting up and see how the engine runs but you may not be able to tell
the difference between an engine problem or stale fuel. If the gas cap remained on, fuel may be usable as the only issue no can state with certainty - whether or not humidity in a tank is absorbed or condenses at the bottom of the tank and sucked into the fuel filter. A small amount of condensation might not affect engine running once the car is driven and the tank filled with fresh fuel.

3-While a fuel filter under the car, in back can make it easier for draining fuel, you're probably going to wire a jumper to the pump relay to use the pump to drain the tank. If you're comfortable with electrical wiring, remove the fuel pump relay and familiarize yourself with pinout labeling on the relay. Relay terminals 30 and 87 are jumpered to send 12v immediately to power up the pump regardless of ignition switch position. You can make an initial test to verify the pump is running and listen for hissing on the fuel line or go to the back of the car and press your ear to the rear fender panel or use a screwdriver butt handle for a stethoscope - pressing your ear to the butt end with the tip pressed against the tank. The alternative is trying to bypass any anti siphon valve in the fuel pipe to siphon fuel. If you try pumping fuel, remove the jumper, disconnect the fuel filter line and insert the line from the tank into a fuel container. Ensure the fuel line won't pop out under pressure or have someone hold the line into the gas container while you reinsert the jumper across the pump relay socket terminals to power the pump. Be aware of flammable fumes - do this outside or in an open garage with plenty of ventilation. NO SMOKING or using electrical equipment while pumping fuel.

The nose knows.

Stick your nose into the tank fill with the splash trap depressed and take a whiff.

If the gas smells like gas - it's probably fine.

unless the car has been exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations, it will be fine.

The 93 SC2 I picked up this year sat in a garage for 5 years with a 1/4 tank. It started
and ran fine.

You might want to prime the engine, but just like OP, i received a '96 that sat in a driveway for almost two years. I had to replace the battery and the belt tensioner, but other than that, it ran surprisingly well on the old fuel in the tank. I immediately drove it to the nearest gas station, and tipped it off with fresh gas. Also, I might recommend putting some seafoam in the gas tank. Good luck, and welcome to this forum!

It is a 2000 Saturn SL.
Thanks for the response. I am surprised to hear some people have had good luck driving cars with old gas in them. Is it possible to EASILY siphon at least some of the gas out of it?

Thanks
Rick

Re: How to drain the gas out of Saturn sl

4 yo gas in the SW2 starts up fine. 3 yo gas in the Ion2 starts fine. Both have Stabil.
I'm going to siphon the old and in with some new.
I bought a Kent-Moore SA9804E-2, which just holds open the metal flapper. A 3/8-inch diameter urethane tube goes into the Ion fuel without any problems. I am still snagging on something trying to reach the fuel in the SW2. Maybe a radiused brass sleeve on the end of the tube will get past the snag...

The 98 siphon trap is complex and designed to resist siphoning. If it captures your Oklahoma credit card you get to completely disassemble the tank to get it out.

FSM info below. This takes 2 separate parts to make it work.

Does anyone have a picture, or measurements, of the siphon hose. I can not figure it out from the FSM diagram :xeye: Is there an official Saturn siphon hose available?

Always dispose of old gas appropriately. I prefer rental cars.

I found a picture of a set that was for sale on ebay. The piece for the filler neck and a siphon hose that looks like the one shown in oldnuc's info.

Ebay add read, "INCLUDES SA9804E-2 , J-42960-1"

Yes, if the tank isn't full. The service manual suggests this; Using the fuel pump to drain the tank is the easiest procedure if the pump is operable. The fuel can be pumped out with the vehicle on the ground or on the hoist.

Another simple way would be siphoning but with an anti-siphon valve built into the fuel filler pipe and having to buy the exact size hose to fit, either guessing is involved or just remove the fuel pipe from the tank. Removing the fuel fill pipe from the tank side allows inserting any hose into the tank to siphon out fuel.

LOL.

Gotta remember that...

Also - any gas powered equipment that you need to refill before returning to rental place .

Would it be easy to remove the fuel line from where it goes into the motor/fuel injector and use the fuel pump to siphon it out?

OldNuc 09-22-2017 12:45 PM

Re: How to drain the gas out of Saturn sl

No. First need to know the year of the car and how much gas is in the tank as it highly likely it is not a problem that needs to be fixed.

Re: How to drain the gas out of Saturn sl

Yes, that is another place to pump fuel out but beware of pumping fuel out an open line. Vapors are highly flammable near any ignition source like a jumper wire - as fuel pumps out into a container, any fuel vapors mix with surrounding air and become an explosive atmosphere near any spark like connecting or disconnecting a 12v circuit. Service manuals mention using an adapter on the fuel line and connecting a hose on the adapter to feed fuel into a gasoline container. All to reduce chances of fuel vapors and raw fuel from splashing out an open fuel line. Remember, fuel pumps out anywhere from 40-65 psi, a strong stream. If you choose to do it this way, examine how to fit a hose onto the fuel line without high pressure popping it off and spraying fuel all over the engine as you suddenly realize what's going on and try to disconnect the jumper wire - raw fuel splashed all over the engine while disconnecting a jumper may cause a spark and this mix may suddenly ignite into an explosion. Think carefully what you are about to do before doing it. Consider all the possible hazards from any mistake when working with flammable gasoline being pumped by the fuel pump under manual control.

Re: How to drain the gas out of Saturn sl

You have nothing to lose by trying a start. To help things along, remove the spark plugs and examine them for corrosion, replace if in doubt. Leave plugs out and crank the engine a few seconds to get oil circulating until the oil pressure light turns off. The starter will turn the engine over faster without compression. put plugs back in and startup.
