1996 5spd wont go into gear

Been a while guys I got laid off from saturn on dec 11th shortly after that my s car stopped shifting inot gear, 96 sl2 manual. So when the cars off the shifter moves freely through all gears no resistance, when I turn the car on I can't shift it clutch pedal feels softer than usual. When I lay onto the clutch pedal with all I got I can manage to get it into gear. No fluid leaks at clutch pedal is a slight droplet of fluid at bellhousing. Installed new engine and clutch/pressure plate 15k ago due to worn thrust bearing. I don't beat the car so the clutch isn't too concerning? I'm thinking slave failure? Its original w 125,000 miles any ideas would be helpful

Master or slave, possibly. Doesn't matter which, since you replace the whole hydraulic system at once.

What happens when you put the clutch down with the engine off, put it in gear, and THEN turn the key? Does the car immediately lurch?

Here's the definitive How-To on diagnosing clutch/hydraulic issues: http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94634

Here's hoping you find gainful employment soon.

If I put the clutch in put into gear and start it does not lurch

Same happened to me, it was the hydraulics. You'll have to replace the whole system, top and bottom. Wasted my clutch too, so it had to go the same time.
