swapping steering wheels
here's what I did... bought a '92 SL2 leather wheel off ebay for my '93 SC1. my airbag doesn't work, and I don't trust 1st gen air bags, so I figured this would be a nice swap. wrong. doesn't fit. shaft is all different. is my only choice to keep the ugly air bag wheel, or can I just change part of the column?
no the splines on the shaft are diffrent.
The only way that you'll be able to use that wheel will require the use of a 91-92 steering column.
If you can find one, the prices from salvage yards are generally pretty reasonable. I bought one a while back for $25, and they even pulled it for me. Also, remember that altering the inflatable restraint system is a no-no, according to the feds. Swapping to a non-SIR wheel is technically only allowed for off-road use. |
Get a 93-94 leather steering wheel.

How do you know your air bag doesn't work? :whoa:
IMO I'd rather have an ugly hunk on my wheel than die... but maybe I'm just crazy :p |
I have decided to put a leather airbag wheel on, from a '94 SC2 I just bought for parts. I don't have a thing against 2nd gen (not saturn 2nd gen- I mean later design airbags) airbags; it's the early ones I don't trust. and, the reason I know there is something wrong is that the bag warning light is on. regardless, I'm on to bigger and badder things now- swapping the twin cam into my SC1! (and the rear sway bar, 130mph speedo, etc, etc...)
Are you sure it's the bag? It might be another part of the system.
I actually doubt its the bag itself, prob just a sensor, but I havent taken the time to have it checked out.
Presuming one would fit your '93 column, why not just wait to find a wheel with a Gen 2 bag?
good question...
