Longer transmission filter...?

How much room around the auto transmission filter?

Wix part number OEM is 57101, which is 3/4-20 thread.
3 and 1/2 inches long...

Wix 57134 is 5 and a half, same 3/4-20 thread...
Gasket differs by a few hundreths of an inch...

And Wix 51802 is 7 and 1/4 long...

Re: Longer transmission filter...?

There is some room...but I'm not sure a longer filter would really offer any advantage. When I owned my SL2, I always changed my transmission fluid every 10-15k miles and my filter at 30k.

The tranny shifted as good as new at 244k when I moved on.

Re: Longer transmission filter...?

If there's a cooling issue, a trans cooler may help. The OEM & cheap replacement radiators don't cool much.

If a Debris issue, the ring magnet helps-- My ('97SW)car with 150kMi, had never had trans service. The oil stayed dirty until after about 6 double oil changes , each with a filter change. Finally, after all the oil changes, at about 215kMi... the oil ran clear, no particles on the magnet.

The standard Wix 51516 may work (it does for engine oil)... but, like most filter housing-elements, it lacks the deep recess/dish which accommodates the ring magnet.
