Flashback Friday: MotorWeek 1992 Small Coupe Comparison Test
It's hard to believe that it was more than 15 years ago when MotorWeek compared what host John Davis described as "a new class of subcompacts called econo-sports." Television's automotive magazine compared the '92 Saturn SC coupe to the Hyundai Scoupe, Toyota Paseo, Geo Storm, and Nissan NX1600.
Thanks for the refresh about the early days. What a great comparison. Would love to see them do an updated version of each company's current models in this category.

I think electric seat belts were used until 1994 for many different car manufacturers. They just stopped using them after that year it seems. I guess they were more of an annoyance than anything else.

The front seats of 1991 - 1994 model year Saturns had manual lap belts and motorized shoulder belts. Starting with the 1995 model year Saturns they no longer had the had motorized shoulder belts (and they gained an air bag for the front passenger).

With the exception of the SC, there was some ugly looking cars back then.

Regarding the mad mouse belts, I have an anecdote about what happened when I showed off my 2nd Saturn, a 1991 SL1, to a co-worker.

She oohed and aahed over the car as we walked to in on the parking lot. She considered getting a new car soon and wanted to check out my Saturn. We got in and I put on my lap belt (can't remember if she followed suit - this was 15 years ago). I started the car and when the shoulder belts came toward us she screeched in fear and tried to get out of the car!

She was a highly excitable person anyway, so I think the vision of this belt coming at her head traumatized her a bit. It remains one of the funnier things I ever saw while working for that particular employer.

IMO the 92 SC was the best Saturn ever built... The mouse belts were a PITA at times.

I can't believe GM put two of their cars in the same segment test. lol They don't do that now.

My mom had a Geo Storm, and hated the car, and they she had got rid of the storm, and got the SATURN SC and loved the SATURN over all her other compact cars, expect the Toyota Celica. Those were her two favorite compact cars.

I can't believed that SATURN won a number one spot. The SATURN SC was a sporty looking coupe.

The only reason why the electric belts disappeared was because they kept jamming, and not working properly after some years.

IIRC were the mouse belts were to meet a "passive restraint" regulation back then?

As I understand it, it was either auto belts or airbags required for the driver then later for both front seats at certain years for cars back then. The mouse or door mounted belts were preferred by many automakers at first until the demand for airbags began to grow.

I remember the Corsica/Beretta's for example had regular belts when they first came out, then had door mounted belts, then had a driver airbag and regular belts, then had the driver bag but door mounted belts again.

The Shadow/Sundance and Spirit/Acclaim also had the odd setup of a regular belt & driver airbag for awhile, but no bag and a mouse belt for the passenger sometime late in their existence.

Good Lord, must be some young ones in here. Yes, "passive restraints" are what the door mounted or motorized belts were called. So were airbags, but they were still too expenisive, so manufacturers used these wacky belt designs. Yes, they were a pain, but they were a solution to a government regualtion that would increase the cost of economy cars by too much. Put a $1000 airbag on a luxury car, and no big deal. Put it on $8000 - $12000 econoboxes, and people get priced out of the market. As airbag prices came down and availability increased, these wacky belts disappeared.
A friend in high scholl bought a Subaru that had these motorized belts back in 1984. I thought they were CRAZY fun.

When I looked for a new small car in the early 90's, the Saturn stood out from cars like the Paseao, NX1600, the Hyuandi(sic) and the rest. Its easy to see how so many were sold. I would drive my white SC around town and people would stop me and tell me what a cool car I had. I guess the Sky might generate the same response.
