Do '00-'02 S-Cars Burn Oil Too?

I checked all the "oil burning" threads to no avail, so sorry to ask this if it has already been covered somewhere.
I simply want to know if, and at what point, Saturn redesigned the DOHC engine in the SL/SW2's to alleviate the oil consumption problem.
Some people say this was only a problem in the "early" vintage S-cars. If so, what is the "cut-off" year?
I am thinking about dumping my '96 SW2 (w/90k) in favor of an '01 SL2 (w/60k) and want to know if I will be in for the same trouble I have in burning oil now.
Thanks in advance!!

The 01-02 engine is the cream of the crop. The intake manifold was redesigned, the "California" emissions air pump was put on all vehicles, the spark plugs and wires have all kinds of connectors to prevent arching, and they have the redesigned head, as do all 99+ DOHC. It's solid.

That being said, the 1.9 is a natural born burner. If you care for them, and change the oil religiously, they often will not burn as bad. And most of the revisions in the last years were made for positive reasons.

Thanks. That is what I had thought/hoped for. Anyone else with further thoughts?

Our 2000 SL1 doesn't burn a drop of synthetic between 5K oil changes. It now has over 110K on it.

My '01 SC1 burns about 1L of oil every 5,000km's. Just have to keep your eye on it and you'll be fine.

Someone may correct me on this, but I believe that most of those changes came in mid-year 99. My 2000 has the redesigned plastic intake manifold and the AIR pump and the extra goodies on the spark plug wires. There may be other changes that came in in '01, but I believe those came in earlier.

As for oil usage. Right now, my wife drives a '98 SL2 with 133K on it and I drive a 2000 SW2 with 75K. I've never added oil to either one except when changing.
