horn on 98 sw2

My horn on my 98 sw2 doesn't work. I checked the fuse and it wasn't that. Anyone have any idea on what I should check now ?

Re: horn on 98 sw2

the horn itself is a pretty common problem

So your saying it's most likely the horn it's self that probably needs to be replaced? If so is that a easy job to be done?

It's not difficult to replace.

The horn is located at the front of the engine near the hood release. Your issue may be the Horn itself or the Horn relay. Either way, you could probably get one inexpensive from the JY, car-part.com or buying one new (the horn and horn relay themselves are roughly about $40 and $24; respectively if you buy them new from Saturnparts.net)

I believe they are held in with either 8MM or 10MM bolts. Been awhile since I have removed one.

ok can someone tell how to take the cover off the relay box that is next to the motor? Do I use the screw driver or does it just pop off? No I'm not blond I just don't want to break something.

One more thing will I beable to tell if the relay is gone on the horn just by looking?

I just replaced the horn on my 98SW2 and it's not behind the hood release. It's down below and on the right side of the drivers side headlight. The easiest way to get to it is remove 2 10mm bolts and unplug the headlight to get it out of your way. Don't think you'll be able to tell if the relay is bad by looking at it.

Is there away I can tell by the horn when I take it out if it's the horn its self that is bad seeing there's no way off knowing if the relay is bad? If I may ask how much did it cost you for the horn? And were you able to get it at a parts store or did you have to get it from a saturn dealer? Thank you..

Re: horn on 98 sw2

There's a central knob on the top of the fuse/relay box; turn that counterclockwise several turns.

To test the horn circuit, unplug the horn; you'll see it has a three-wire connector with one orange and two black wires, in a row. Put a DC voltmeter between the terminal for the orange wire and the "outside" black wire. It should read 12V-ish. Then put the negative probe of the voltmeter to the "central" black wire terminal. That should read zero volts. Keep the voltmeter in place while an assistant presses one of the horn buttons. NOW it should read 12V-ish. If all of the above are true, you can be pretty assured that either the horn itself or its built-in relay are bad. It really doesn't matter if it's the relay or the klaxon itself.

Don't have a voltmeter? Get one. It's cheaper than the horn (cheaper than just about any electrical component it's capable of troubleshooting), and will help you with your next electrical issue (and the next, and the next....).

Well the horn may have been moved on the 2nd Gen cars, because on my 1st Gen cars, the horn is right next to the hood release in the engine bay, and I don't have to remove the headlight to get to it's location.

On second gen s-series, or at least my 96, the horn is below the driver side headlight. The relay and horn are one unit.

You might do just as well to drive it up on ramps and go at it from underneath. Or have an 18-point whitetail buck smash your fender and fenderwell to pieces, creating an easy reach, like I did.
