Found a new noise today when driving on icy roads and when crossing the deep snow in my backyard... Hopefully someone will tell me it isn't an expensive fix..

When the AWD engages, I hear an almost grinding sound seemingly coming from the right rear. Kind of has the same sound as tires spinning quickly on ice. I KNOW this isn't the cause. It is mechanical within the car since it makes the same noise on ice or on fluffy snow.

Seems to happen exactly when the AWD kicks in, and goes away immediately after AWD disengages. AWD still seems to work though.

I have seen some threads on 04 RDM recall issues, but don't know what the symptoms or fix was, or if this is the same axle as before. Also posted this on the RedLine area when I should have done it here first. Sorry!

Heading to the dealer tomorrow. Hopefully with an idea from here before I go.

Depending on what the sound really is, it may just be normal RDM engagement noises. Get it checked out.

Dealer says RDM needs to be replaced!

I am working with SCAC to hopefully resolve this issue. It is NOT normal engagement sound. It is a new sound that I was just able to hear when we got snow this past weekend. Who knows when things really went bad, but I'm at about 42K miles with a possibility of a $1000 bill on an 11 month old vehicle.....

Removed by poster because he is a moron.

I posted something about it being covered as long as you were under 36K... Missed the whole fact that you mentioned you had (42K miles).

Regardless, that component should not go bad so soon... Total BS.

I wasnt trying to discount waht you were hearing, just that some people arent used to hearing the AWD system kick in. Was the sound you were hearing a muffled groan type noise? If so, it is the RDM. More than likely they will cover most if not all of it. Dont be upset if they dont cover all of it though. You are technically out of warranty.... BTW, what do you do that you put 40k + on in less than a year.

As of this morning, SCAC is willing to pay for parts. Not sure what I am going to do at this point. It will still cost me about $500. :x  :upset:

I will let you guys know what happens....
