Can anyone help with a chart that deciphers the VIN on the Saturn VUE.

Have looked around without luck.

Thanks

You have to read it from left to right. :D
(Sorry, I couldn't resist)

What kind of information are you trying to get form your vin?

PM me and I can decode it for you, no problem.

Here is a website that decodes *most* saturn vehicles and some VUEs.

http://www.caseyhalverson.com/saturn/vin.php

It will straight out give you an error message if it cannot decode it.

VIN = 17 digits

1st digit = country of manufacture ("1" for all Saturns since "1" = USA)

2nd+3rd digits = "G8" meaning "GM" and "Saturn"

4th+5th digits = car line and sales code. E.g., my SC2 has "ZG" so let's pretend "Z" means SC and "G" means DOHC (that's a guess)

6th digit = body style (coupe, sedan or wagon). My coupe has a "1" so that must mean coupe.

7th digit = safety restraint features included with this car. This means either "passive restraint seat belts" or "passive restraint with DSIR". I've got SIR and my digit is "5" which is weird, but this must mean "passive restraint with DSIR"

8th digit = engine type. My DOHC has the digit "7"

9th digit = check digit for all vehicles. I don't know what this means, but maybe it's some sort of checksum-like thing *shrug*

10th digit = model year. M = 1991, N = 1992, P = 1993 (someone lost "O" apparently). My 93 has "P" so that's reassuring.

11th digit = "Z" and indicates the car was built in Spring Hill, TN

12-17th digits = production sequence number

That's all I know! Good luck!

Unfortunately, some (if not all) of the VUEs have odd ball VINs.

Instead of 1G8, it starts with 5GZ ... and there are a couple more new entires that are VUE specific.

Thanks for the VIN error email. It looks like it did everything except line, series, and body. This should further develop the VUE portion of the decoder..

Casey, I have a 2003 VUE VIN if you want to work more on your decoder :)

VIN minus sequence = 5GZCZ43D93S

Here is a generic VIN decoder...

1st character- Identifies the country in which the vehicle was manufactured.
For example: U.S.A.(1,4 or 5), Canada(2), Mexico(3), Japan(J), Korea(K), England(S), Germany(W), Italy(Z)

2nd character- Identifies the manufacturer. For example; Audi(A),
BMW(B), Buick(4), Cadillac(6), Chevrolet(1), Chrysler(C), Dodge(B),
Ford(F), GM Canada(7), General Motors(G), Honda(H), Jaquar(A), Lincoln(L), Mercedes Benz(D), Mercury(M), Nissan(N), Oldsmobile(3), Pontiac(2or5), Plymouth(P), Saturn(8), Toyota(T), VW(V), Volvo(V).

3rd character- Identifies vehicle type or manufacturing division.

4th to 8th characters- Identifies vehicle features such as body style, engine type, model, series, etc.

9th character- Identifies VIN accuracy as check digit.

10th character- Identifies the model year. For example: 1988(J), 1989(K), 1990(L), 1991(M), 1992(N), 1993(P), 1994(R), 1995(S), 1996(T),
1997(V), 1998(W), 1999(X), 2000(Y)------2001(1), 2002(2), 2003(3)

11th character- Identifies the assembly plant for the vehicle.

12th to 17th characters- Identifies the sequence of the vehicle for production
as it rolled of the manufacturers assembly line.

We should be able to nail this down based on a few examples.

My 2003 VUE AWD 4cyl VTi also has 5GZCZ43D93S.

In case anybody wants to see the algorithm for computing/verifying the "check digit" check this out:

David 93SL2m, this really works!

The check digit on my SL2 VIN# is "2" and after doing all the computations (sans calculator) :ugh: the remainder after division was also "2".

Good question, L300Boy.

I'm guessing that as far as the first digit is concerned:
"1" = cars
"4" = vans (like Ford Econoline/Chevy Express)
"5" = trucks and SUVs

I'm guessing that they just ran out of numbers. ;) My 1989 GMC Jimmy starts with a "1", but then again the term "SUV" wasn't really big then and it is either considered a light truck or station wagon.

Why is this VIN code so hard to figure out on a VUE? Mine is 5GZCZ33D23S896747. All I really am sure about is the last 6 digits. What do the first eleven mean, anyone have the code?
Thanks,
Frank

FWIW, I also noticed at an auto show that the Element also uses the 5 for the first digit. -That was also when first I noticed that some of the 4-dr accords also come from mexico :hmpf:

I bet Honda will feature that information in an upcoming ad (NOT)!
I'm not knocking Mexico, just buyer perceptions! Buicks beat the Japanese for top midsize quality, but the word never gets out to the marketplace for some reason.
