About a year ago (while still in warranty) we had a rattle in our front passenger side wheel. Turned out to be the caliper pins were not greased enough and was rattling. Now the rattle has come back, and I was wondering if anyone knows how to go about doing this. I did my brakes on my '95 SC2, not sure if the setup is the same or not. The tech did tell me last time though it will not hurt anything, the pin is still greased. Just not enough.

If it isnt under warranty anymore, get new caliper guide pin bushings and replace them yourself. All you need to do the job is remove the wheel, and take the caliper off, pull out lower caliper pin, remove old bushing, install new bushing, grease liberally, reinstall caliper, reinstall wheel, move to other side....

Takes about an hour if you do it in your driveway. Costs maybe $10-15 if you need to buy caliper grease.

Since you had yours greased, they came out with a bulletin advising of replacing bushings with an updated part. It gets rid of the rattle permanently (so far).... LOL

Sounds good. I should have mentioned our warranty has run out. Thanks for your help!

If it's not too much trouble do you (any anyone else) know the part # I am looking for? Or will they know what I am talking about if I go in and ask for a "caliper guide pin bushings"?

They should know what you are talking about. If not, tell them it is the rubber bushing on the end of the caliper pin.... If they dont get it after that, leave. :D

How liberally do you need to grease the pins? I put a thin layer on mine when I did the last brake job and haven't heard any rattles so far.

At least a thin coating will do the trick. The big part is the new bushings installed.....

Guys; Great info - thanks. Also for the novices, be sure to use only brake caliper grease. This is very important to prevent grease from migrating to the rotor/pads.

I've got a small container of synthetic Permatex caliper grease but I recently saw a small tub of synthetic CRC (?) caliper grease at Pep Boys that looked like it was a good price.

Great information as usual on this site.

On my 2005 Vue, I've had it in to the dealer 3 times to fix the front end rattle. The last two times they had it for over a week. It still rattles, but goes away when the brakes are applied. I am about to give up on the dealer service to fix this problem.

I'm thinking of just replacing these bushings myself. Do I need two bushings for each wheel?

Nope. Just one per side on the lower caliper pin. You will see it.

Thanks Big Daddy!

Can you recommend a source where I can mail order a pair of pins and bushings to fix this problem for good? The nearest Saturn dealer is over 35 miles away.

What are the part numbers for both the pins and bushings?

I finally got around to installing these new bushings when I did the brakes on my wife's VUE. The new bushings look exactly like the old ones. But we'll see if it makes any difference. You can see some silvered wear points on the guide pins from where they've been rubbing on the caliper carrier when they bounce around. My eyes nearly popped out after learning that I was going to pay almost $9 for two rubber bushings that literally look like 1/2" slices off a hollow piece of licorice. :)

There was no noise on the test drive while I was bedding in my new brakes (ATE slotted rotors + Hawk HPS pads). But I wouldn't expect any noise right away since the guide pins are all grease up with fresh grease now. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Best,
