How do I tell if it's an SL or an SL1? Can someone help me?

My Chiltons manual says that the models are identified by the 4th and 5th digit of the Vehicle Identification Number, but it does not list all the codes. The 4th digit is for the car line, and the 5th digit is the "sales code". To quote: "the sales code for a sedan will designate if the car is an SL, SL1 or SL2".

If you post the 5th digit if your VIN perhaps someone with either an SL or an SL1 will confirm which model you have.

Well the last 2 digits are 93. but im guessing thats just the year.

The year is actually the 10th digit. M=1991, N=1992, P=1993, R=1994, S=1995....

The 12th through 17th digits are production sequence numbers identifying your specific car.

The fifth Character does tell the model:

Your Vin should start like this:

1G8ZF5

Note the Letter F could be for a SC1 (Auto) 2 door or a SL (manual) BUT with the NEXT Character a 5, it now tells us that it is a 4 Door Sedan. Using both of the codes makes it a SL model.

Sort of funny that the coding says SL and then manual, as the SL only is a manual and never has been an Automatic.

I have the codes for all Saturns including the VUE. BUT I have ffound a problem with one letter in the VUE coding and have to investigate it.

To add to what Jim said:

The 11th Character is a Z the Plant is Spring Hill and the the 12th Character is a 1.This will be the case for ALL "S" series cars.

The 11th Character is a S the Plant is Spring Hill and the the 12th Character is a 8.This will be the case for ALL the "VUE" series .

The 11th Character is a Y the Plant is Wilmington and the the 12th Character is a 6.This will be the case for ALL "L" series cars in 2000. When the 12th Character is a 5, this will be the case for ALL "L" series cars after 2000 (2001 & 2002).

Thanks Al. That would be good reference material on the board.

Does anyone have a complete VIN guide for Saturns? I think it would be fun to write some sort of web-based decoder program.

5th digit: F
10th digit: P
11th digit: Z
12th digit: 1
17th digit: 3

So I know it's a 1993 Saturn SL, but is it an SL or SL1?

Hey guys

Really easy way to tell this. SL's don't have a right-hand rearview mirror and are always stickshift. SL1's have a right-hand rearview mirror and can be stickshift or automatics.

The closest thing I've seen to a VIN Guide for Saturn is online here (http://www.saturnfans.com/help/faq/vin.html). From what I remember, Al helped me put it together awhile ago. There's also a good article about VIN numbers online here (http://www.chicagotribune.com/classified/automotive/columnists/chi-0112240060dec24.column). It would be pretty cool to have an automated one though... I'll put that on my list of things to do.

Enjoy,
Charlie

Had 3 SL's.

Dealer always added right mirror on ordered SL's - $40 factory option.

Best identifier is lack of power steering. However a few SL's got free P/S when trouble hit manual steering racks. Got one like that in 97.

Ive been doing some research since my last post. I found lots of scattered information, enough to write a decoder program at least (rexx).

ill shoot over the php code if/when im done with it.

Let me get this straight, you could technically have an SL with a mirror on just one side of the car?!

thats crazy..

Still a work in progress, if you get an error, send me your VINs so i can look into it:

http://www.caseyhalverson.com/saturn/vin.php

There are quite a few checks i can do to "validate" a VIN number, but right now it decodes it digit per digit (with the exception of position 5 and 6, which calls a certain condition).

I think the next step will be to put in validation/checksum and print a year, make, model, trim banner at the top.

L300Boy: I just tried the decoder, but I used all lowercase letters, and that made the decoder not be able to tell anything about those particular digits.

You should either put a note saying "Use all caps", or else do validation checking on lowercase letters too :)

Nice job :)

thanks for catching that.... used the strtoupper() function, now you can enter it in lowercase or uppercase :)

JrDave2324...... another good way to tell if your Saturn is an SL or SL1 is to look at the front seats. The SL has vinyl on the seat backs and the SL1 has fabric. Also, if you have the original wheel covers, the SL has a "soccer ball" design and the SL1 has a six spoke design in silver and dark gray. If your looking to customize your car, the differences between the two models won't really matter.

The VIN decoder was erroring out non-L series vehicles. I fixed this, but it still is a work in progress as there are some VINs that still break the "decoder rings" people have posted here.
