Ok, i know this is a noob question, but i searched everywhere and didn't find anything that really answered my questions about an 06 Vue Radio.

I want to replace my stock radio with a Pioneer In-Dash GPS unit (model escapes me atm). How can i keep all my stock options, including on-star and the steering wheel controls?

Thanks in advance!

Well in searching Crutchfield, I entered my vehicle and it says for steering wheel controls i can use this (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-8GFhphF2xe4/cgi-bin/prodview.asp?search=Steering+wheel+controls&i=127SWIX). Now for the on-star part it says i can't use this (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-nmX5Vx97GHL/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=750&I=127OS1) because my radio has RDS, but i don't think it does. Im also assuming that i can use both of these and when i take it to bestbuy they will know how to install it. The head unit im looking at is Pioneer AVIC-D2 (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-nmX5Vx97GHL/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=750&I=127OS1)

Nice, but has anyone installed an aftermarket in an 06 and kept the on-star and steering wheel controls?

I know some view the in dash units as cleaner but I just got a PDA with GPS. (Iqu3600). for alot less money you could have something much more versitile. I can keep it there or take it with me when I travel. Just my .02.

Yeah, its mainly the fact that it looks clean, but also that I want to replace the radio anyways so i can get mp3 playback and sat radio, and the cost to upgrade to the pioneer is about as much as buying a cd player and a good handheld gps. But yeah you are paying a little more for that clean look. Altough i might have to get a pda, since nobody has seem to replace their 06 stock radio and kept steering wheel controls, on-star and all the chimes. Am i the only one that wishes to keep all that stuff?

Well, i just spoke to someone at crutchfield and according to them there is no way to keep on-star on a 2006 Vue while replacing the factory radio, not yet at least according to the guy. Guess im the only one wanting to replace the factory but keep on-star, strange.

Hey Prok,

I'm in the same boat as you. I've been looking for months for somekind of kit for the on-star and radio but i guess there is not enough demand. So if you find a way to change out the radio let us know. Also are there any harnesses for the radio for an aftermarket one if you dont want the onstar, also somekind of dash kit?

Thanx and good luck

Well i just got an e-mail from PAC-Audio and they do not currently make any on-star adapters for the 06 Vue and are not sure when they will, but according to the sales rep they hope to be getting one out soon because it is a popular car.

So now here is the questions, do i wait and hope they come out with an adapter, or at least some one does, or do i invoke my 30/1000 exchange and go ahead and get a vue with the upgraded audio. Or i guess a third option would be wait and hope the come out with a kit and just get a cheap xm portable to listen to through the aux connector.

Just install the radio and forget Onstar. I dont have it in my VUE (05) but I do have the radio you want and it is awesome. Just keep a cell phone with you! The idiots at onstar get you more lost than anything. My buddy with his monte carlo used it all the time and was always mad at them for making it worse. Only good thing in the event of a crash. Anyway if you get the radio get the upgraded XM box for the predictive traffic...SOOOO worth it! It comes out easy enough so when the kit is made just install it then. The GPS is great and the search features are awesome, I see no need for onstar.

hey i was just tryin to find out if i can hook up on-star to an after market pioneer.. circuit city says their is an adapter it runs about $150 i don't remember what exactly he called it but he said it is available and can be installed whenever.. another stereo shop here in my town said that any stereo could be hooked up to on-star with this device.. i suggest call circuit city and see if u get the same story.

The onstar interface you are talking about is good through the 05 model so I am told. I was just researching this same thing last week and was told also that there is no interface yet available for an 06. So I am like you now - just waiting. I also read an article where someone kept the original head unit for onstar sake and mounted it under the seat, though I am not sure the intricacies involved in such an install.

Yes, there is a on-star interface, but it is only good for up the the 05 models. In the 06 Vue GM started using a new Data Stream for on-star (previously it was Class 2). I contacted Scocshe (a company that makes car adapters and interfaces) and they said they have the on-star interface and chime adapter made for an 06 Vue but its still in testing faces, at least another 3-6 months before you can buy it according to them.

To each is own on wether you want to keep on-star on not, but i would just prefer to keep it. I travel alot and don't neccesarrily know where i am, and for the ability to just hit a button and have on-star send cops, ambulance to my location in the case of an accident its worth it for me. Now at the end of my free year im going to evualate it then, but still want the option.

@05vueblue: I have an 04 and want to put that same unit in, but every site I look on the net it says it won't fit? Was that the case for you as well and just made it fit? How hard was it? Did u do it urself or had it done?

I was told it would not fit because no mounting kit. I made my own becasue I really wanted to use this unit. I love it and well worth the money. As I see there are companies making the double din kit now. There is plenty of room back there for the unit and the large box (xm/ predictive nav) box.

As far as i can tell there is still no Double Din Dash Kit (although making one isn't hard), but more importantly nobody has come up with a On-Star wiring harness for the 06' yet.

I have "04 V-6 AWD The Onstar unit becomes obsolete in '08. Onstar is going to develop new units to replace old analog stuff. Call Onstar.
