OK, my wife is gone to the parents for Xmas and right after she left the SES light came on. I think I may have not put the gas cap on correctly (filled it up on way home from airport). I disconnected the negative battery lead overnight to clear the SES light and it has been sitting for about a week. I just got in to it and it cranks, has lights etc.... but won't start!!!! Any thoughts?
:upset:
It's a 2002 6 cyl AWD by the way!

Too late to edit. Also, one other bit of info. I think I did start it and ran it for about 30 seconds after I replaced the battery lead and that was about a week ago.

OK. Not sure what I did but I tried the security angle and locked it and manually unlocked it with the key and then it started (after a while). Was going to search for a fuel cutoff swithcj next so all seems well. Still, any thoughts what may have happened? Surely leaving it sit for 7 days didn't do it? The temp is about 40 degrees today and it's in a garage so it's not exactly harsh starting conditions either.

Sounds like the antitheft passlock may have been confused.
The body control module may have thought you bypassed the ignition switch.
It will crank but not start and the security light will remain lit while cranking if there is a problem with the passlock.

Is there a "proper" procedure for reseting the passlock?

For the body control module to learn the ignition lock resistance if car will not start:
Crank engine fow a few seconds and leave ignition switch
in run mode for 10 minutes (security light will go out after 10 minutes)
Turn off ignition switch and repeat this sequence three times (30 minute procedure)

Thanks,
Do you know if this also applies to the SL2s (certain model years?)

Certain fuel-injected vehicles, when started and then turned off before warming up, will not start later because too much fuel is present in the engine (flooded). The usual trick is to floor the gas and hold it while cranking to blow out the cylinders, but this may not work on the VUE with no physical connection from the gas pedal to the throttle plate. Your VUE probably started after sufficient cranking cleared the cylinders. Of course, it could have been the security thing, too.
