View Full Version : 4 Quick Q's - any help please! TY!
2002 Vue, FWD 5spd Man. Sunroof. 80k
Q1: Road noise. Tires are good. Was thinking about dynamatting the interior floor. Any ideas on how many square feet? I was thinking 36 or 40 then plus the doors and firewall. Thoughts? Anyone done this and are familiar with results? Any other ideas?
Q2: Wetness under drivers' side carpet. I can't find any posts on clearing the drains from the sunroof. Help? A how-to or just the location and what to look for? Thanks!
Q3: Backup Lights - Not working. Haven't looked into it yet, possibility of a switch near the shifter? or maybe just a blown fuse, but why? hmmm. . .. .thoughts?
And lastly,
Q4: Steering column - has a slight creak to it while turning. Any thoughts on where to lithium grease or wd40 every few months?
I know this is a lot, just respond to what you can or link away. Much appreciated, LOVE THIS RIDE! First car was a 1991 sl1. Base model baby, no right side mirror! HA! lol. Died from a frozen shaft that had the gear on the end wrenched off by the starter. 196,000 mi.
Thanks again,

Road noise new or always there? If new then perhaps a wheel bearing.
Wet carpet. Perhaps a sun roof drain hose is off of the sun roof module and the water is running down the A pillar trim.
Reverse lights. If fuses are ok then the reverse switch is likely the problem. Sould be near the drivers side tire. Can't remember for sure right now.
Rubber on metal squeaking? There is a TSB for this. The steering colum shaft where it goes through the firewall is making noise on a rubber boot. Special grease kit availible.
If still under warrenty all of the above should be covered.

My steering colum creaks like an old step or door hinge. Its only when I have the blinkers on though. Is yours the same way? If so, my dealer greased it a couple times, replaced a few parts (dont remember what ones) and everything helped for a couple weeks then it would start again. The noise is just starting to go away (that or I have gotten so used to it).
In regards to the road noise, if it is new, then I have to agree about the bearings. If it has been there since new, there have been people who have posted results of and how to apply various types of sound proofing. I personally wish there was more noise. Then I would not be able to hear certain people talk in my car. :) Actually, after being in a 91 saturn, anything seems too quiet. I like to hear the noise.
Looks like the sound has always been there, car before this was a 97 exploder, so it was pretty solid . . . as the rust hadn't set it yet. :p Thanks for the info, I'll look into the sound proofing threads - right now I'm on the WIFI at the dealership getting the oil changed and the hoses looked at. There's just no time any more to tear the world apart to find the cause of the dampness, ya know?
I'll check that rubber boot on the firewall - maybe give it some wd 40 just to see if it kills the squeaking, then from there possibly some wheel bearing grease I have lying around.
Backup lights - is there a process for testing the switch that anyone knows of? I'll peak into it when I do the rubber boot.
Thanks for all the help guys!

Ditto on the creaking while the signal is on...annoys the heck out of me..wish I knew what to grease.
2004+ benefitted from extra noise insulation...and I wouldn't mind some more..especially wind noise (particularly if you have a bug deflector)

On the wet floor: I think there was a TSB about this regarding adding some sealent to the area near the windshield / cowl. I think with a heavy rain water can come in from the cowl area. You should try to get this fixed and dry out the carpet as it could cause rusting of the floor pan, which is NOT plastic :(
Ok, it's been a while, what's a TSB? Technical Service Bulletin? and where do I get them?
SSPEER: What kind of noise dampening did you do? What'd you use, and did you do the floor as well? Thanks!
Answers are helping a lot. The saturn tech at the dealer showed me my internal air filter - ABSOLUTELY CLOGGED! My eyes had been burning on the long commute in the morning from allergy stuff, and that's probably a big factor.
Does anyone think that when the air is on defrost, the air conditioning could have been getting backed up, and causing condensation before the filter which would run down onto the floorboards?
Thanks!

I haven't done any dampening personally. Someone has put some Dynamat on the front doors (Dante???) and said it was a big difference, but it makes the noise coming through the back end more noticeable...

If you floorboard is wet or damp you rheater core is probably bad.

You may be thinking of a windnoise TSB. With out actually looking it up I don't thinkthat there is a TSB for water leakage at the LF area on the VUE's.
