View Full Version : FWD to AWD conversion?
I'm about to buy a 2002 Vue 4cyl FWD 5 sp. Manual.
Does anyone have any insight or experience with possibly adding the parts to a 2wd for 4wd? Is the trann ENTIRELY different? ANY knowlege you have on the big differences between the two that play into this project would be fantastic!
Thanks!

To my knowledge there is no AWD 5sp. man. The AWD have automatic tranny's

Correct. Which makes this swap next to impossible unless you have some incredible fabrication skills.

It would be cheaper just to sell the 2wd Vue and buy a similar one with 4wd.

Thats what I was wondering... I'm sure there is a reasonable, albeit inexcusable, explaination.

After doing alot of serious off roading with mine. The reason is probably because when flying around thru rivers, over cliffs etc, etc. It's all anyone can handle to just hold on to the steering wheel.
So it wouldn't be safe to try to operate a stick shift.
These are serious off roading vehicles and only automatics are safe.

Tell that to a rock climber in a Wrangler with a stick ;)
I've had my FWD4 in the creek and through cornfields a few times... it likes to toss you around inside when it gets rough.

Mazda, Ford, Toyota, Subaru and Honda offer AWD and a 5 speed in their small SUV's. I was amazed that Saturn did not offer one. They are fun to drive and can help out in snow and rough terrain. However, I gave up a 5 speed because of the all day gridlock traffic conditions around DC.

I should have expressed more sarcasm when I mentioned rally racing :-P

I would spend a small fortune to convert my V6 AWD to manual trans. I think a six speed would be awesome. Much more fun to drive on road and off the beaten path. The auto can go a bit nuts on the bumpier paths and in the deeper mud. The six speed would also help my MPG out on the highway.
I would probably never sell my Vue if I did this mod to it. Would be in my driveway till the day I die.

LOL you and me both man. Too bad Honda doesn't make a suitable 6spd manual tranny with AWD... Maybe we could bolt up a Subaru drivetrain! LOL

If an when the tranny goes...and the rest of the car is holding up well, I may spend the money at a local shop and see what kind of custom work it will entail. I've made up my mind that this is my last automatic vehicle until I am too old to shift (and when that happens, chances are I am too old to drive)
I would settle for a 5 speed manual if handa had one suitable for this engine.
