View Full Version : Baseline Dyno
About to bore out my tb since that's all sps does and a new plate. I just got my new 2001 SC2 dyno'd. I thought I could use this as a starting point. Where did you guys start at? Just curious if some cars gain/lose couple horsepower at beggining. They did 3 runs. The first in 4th gear which wasn't as good as the next 2 in 3rd gear. I averaged out to 109HP and 108TQ at the tire. Which works out to 15% loss in power from engine to tires. This seems pretty consistent on most cars.
Should I do a straight trough bore or angled bore on my tb? What intake should I go with? Hotshot? Weapon R? Injen? Monkey Racing?
I will give dyno's after adding each part including an Adam Chant Supercharger that I am 90% likely to get when ready.

I'm flattered, but it's a MYSATURN Motorsports Supercharger.
A Lot of blood, sweat, tears, time, money, and knowledge went into that kit and it would be wrong of me to say it was all me..
I think it would have to be called the Silva-Chant-Levya-Weible Supercharger to be more accurate.
By the time you save up the money for it, it will be ready, I promise you that.
I digress..
If you have Dyno print outs please get them online so we can see. I don't care that the car is stock. I want to know what the curves look like with all the new features of the 2001 vehicles...
For the intake I would get the Hotshot, just because they are kewl and chrome and the OG intake.
Sorry, the MYSATURN supercharger. Do you have dyno's on older versions?

how much did it run to get the dyno done?
It cost $51 with tax. Not bad if ya ask me. Of course it is the only one in KC I have been to. I can't wait for the supercharger!

I believe the blacksheep racing website lists how various TB bores affect low, midrange, and high rpm torque/horsepower. Basically if you widen the TB you will be able to flow more air at high RPMs, which will improve peak horsepower ratings, but you will be lessening the intake velocity which causes you to lose a few ft/lbs at low RPMs. The same is true for exhaust diameter. You could get a 3.5" exhaust which would allow you to flow a lot of air at 6500 RPM, but you would lose a lot of low rpm torque. Take the Integra Type R for example, it comes from the factory with just about everything poted/polished and/or bored out. That is why it has a high peak horsepower rating, yet the peak torque number (somewhere around 130 ft/lbs) does not seem in proportion to the HP number. So, consider what you want to do with your car before you go enlarging every orifice in it.

The HP gains from the Supercharger are well over 200 HP. Enough that you'll probably have to be replacing clutches like mad because the stock unit can't deal with the power going to it..
Oh, boy would that be stupid of me to sell a product that will cause other stock components to fail....
OK, Maybe I'll wait for a respectable Clutch replacemnt to come out before I go selling my stuff....

oh here's a funny for everyone going to work today saw a "riceboy special" 2001 civic DX (yes DX) lowered, custom wheels, spoiler taller than the car. all kinds of japanese vinyl letters on it,indiglo dash. led tailights.bear in mond i go to work at 3am. best part was flashing my highs so he would move his slow @ss out of my way. <img src="http://64.77.2.166/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/Images/Happy.gif" border="0" align="middle">

For extra enojoyment, check out the Beaterz.com site for more fine exmaples of what not to do to your car. This Honda DX sounds like a definate Beaterz.com car - i definately need a digital camara to start documenting this outrageous fashion.
for even more added fun - go to http://www.rinkworks.com/dialect/ type in the beaterz.com site and view it after it's been translated to redneck, elmer fudd, jive, or sweedish chef. :) enjoy

Yobos4vr,
If you follow the SPOC list you may be aware of this, but if not, I have been working directly with Advanced Clutch Technology for 2 years now on the development of a quality aftermarket clutch. We are in the final stages of development and will have a product in a vehicle in the next month of so. Look for updates here and on Advanced Clutch Technology's website as soon as we have a solution..
As it stands now ACT advises that you stick with the OEM clutch unless you are making more than 200 TQ, which is very respectable for any compact car. They could be doing the same mods to the OEM units that everyone else is and selling them to every Joe as better than OEM, but instead they have been honest and will only offer a product for major built-up vehicles where it's actually needed.

I dyno'd at 120.3 hp and 119.9 ft blbs to the wheels three times in a row. I lucked out and went to a dyno day and only paid $20. I figure I'll be at 144hp to the crank. I have the chart and mods posted on my website.

Hey guys, what kind of performance mods would you recommend for a 2001 SL2 Automatic? Is forced induction not worth it for an auto (I'd love to supercharge it)? For now, I'm planning to get a Hotshot intake (not the ceramic one) and the throttle body, then maybe think about the exhaust.
Q: About the throttle body, is that a good idea if I want to be wary of my warranty? I've only got 5000 of my 45000 mile coverage used up so far... I don't want to go crazy until I hit that 45K.
Thanks,
- Mike

I'd be prepared to return your car to stock whenever you intend to bring it in for any warranty work, whether or not it seems related to the air intake or throttle body. Rather than buying an aftermarket tb, where you'll have to trade your original one in as a core, I'd buy a 2nd throttle body from Joey at saturnusedparts.com (link above) and bore it out yourself. There was a thread here covering all the different ways people have done it, how easy it was, etc.
As for the exhaust, you'll be giving up a lot of warranty, as I think the federally mandated warranty listed in the warranty booklet is 7 yrs/70K miles. It'll be easy for them to tell it's not stock when you come roarin' in for warranty service!
I'm not sure if Saturn is a stickler for stock when it comes to warranty, but I've heard Dodge screw a person just for having their oil changed at a quick lube. They wouldn't cover an engine that failed!

It all depends on your dealer. The dealer I go to loves all the stuff I do and while my car is no longer under warrenty, they still fixed stuff for me while it was. I also get wholesale so it really depends. I plug them all the time when I'm out driving around so it's more or less a "you scratch my back, I'll scratch your's" kind of thing.

The dyno is owned by MC racing. It is off of I35 and Antioch in Merriam, Kansas.

thanks for the location. does your tech do repairs on saturns off the clock from the dealership?
Since I work 80 hours a week. I can only come in on Saturdays. I tell him I am coming in and he goes off clock to do what I need done.

A little late to the topic, but here is my info. I dynoed my SC2 about a month ago while in Chicago with the SPC. Torque figures weren't available, but the max power dynoed for a third gear run was 117.4 hp with an intake, synthetic motor and tranny fluid, and a short serpentine belt (no AC). I was very surprised considering my SC2 had 118k on it at the time and the timing chain was starting to go. This weekend I'll be installing a header and I might do a little more engine work before getting the SC2 dynoed again in late June, hopefully with torque numbers.

I checked the dyno sheet at it was the opposite 108HP 109TQ not 109&108 respectively. It was in third gear. It had the steel black wheels with plastic hubcaps. Not sure how much better alloys would have done.
