Anyone know what causes gas mileage to decrease in older cars? I have a 94 SL2 and my gas mileage is about 10 MPG under a new Sl2. I know cars tend to get less efficient over time but I think this is excessive. I changed the air filter and plugs but
I don't know what else to do.

well driving habits play a big role. also you could try cleaning the fuel injectors.

Might want to check into some new wires if you havent replaced them.

Anyone know how much heavier wheels can affect gas mileage? What about power also?

Thanks.

The EGR might be approaching the end of its life. As it fails, gasoline mileage drops, the car hesitates when "coasting" forward from a stop, and eventually the SES light will come on (I think the code is 32). The EGR valve and its solenoid are easy to replace and don't cost all that much - maybe $75 for both at http://www.IronToad.com

Another simple factor affecting gasoline is the tires. Are they the same size? Do they have the same rolling resistance? Are they properly inflated?
