Some of you have probably read my message about how loud the exhaust system (everything from the cat back) that I purchased from SPS was after install (see post "Noise Reduction?"). I did a little investigating and found that the clamp shipped with the system to hold the muffler on was either faulty or inadequate to the task. It loosened (looking at it now.. I think it actually just broke from the stress) and allowed the muffler to seperate from the pipe.

If you are considering the SPS exhaust system, I HIGHLY recommend going to your local shop and picking up a Muffler Clamp (I paid only $2.95). It's a heavy-duty steel piece that tightens down hard and secure.

After I installed the muffler with the better clamp, everything started running smooth and blessedly quiet (in comparisson). It's still loud on acceleration, but cruising is much quieter. And besides, who wants there car to be quiet on acceleration?

What has SPS had to say regarding this?

To be honest, I haven't had the opportunity to contact them about it as of yet. When I do, I'll post their reply. I've been impressed with my dealings with them so far, so I can probably guess at their response.

I'll let you know

I recomend skipping the clamp, and going to a muffler shop and paying them $20 to weld things together, you don't get that bobble that you see when cars drive over bumps and such, it makes things very sturdy.

Levitrious,

I have had the SPS cat-back exhaust (part of the 21 hp package I bought from them) on 2 different cars. It was first installed on my former 96 SL2 and when I bought my 98 SL2, it was moved to it about a couple of months after I bought it.

I did have to replace the muffler strap about 6 months ago. It broke at the bolt.

About the noise, with the Borla that I have, I called Borla and they sent me 2 baffles (sp?). They are shaped like a thread spool and need to be welded. I decided against having it done as I really like the sound.
