Is there a technique to spin the front tires and leave a cloud of smoke? and I'm not talking about on a rainy day over crosswalk stripes! Is it possible with an auto tranny? Is it possible with a saturn or is it only possible with twice as many cylinders and three times the displacement?

Barn93sl1a,

If your handle indicates the Saturn that you have, I don't think you could burn rubber. Until 1995, the SL and the "1" models, had only 85 hp. We had a 93 SC1 automatic and IMO was very slow.

Luckily, in 1995 Saturn retuned the SL and "1" models. They now have 100 hp.

I have modified my former 96 SL2 and my current 98 SL2 (both automatics). With T/C shut off, I have burned rubber if I step on it too hards "at times". BUT, I have also upgraded my tires and now it does not happen.

BTW, burning tires is NOT very productive. IMO burning rubber does not indicate useful power. It would be the car that uses the power to move forward that I would want.

BUT if you really want to burn rubber, you could get some "bald" tires (:]

Sure you can burn rubber.
You have an auto....do a brake stand. You'll have to time it just right!!!

fast 928,
What's a brake stand?

While your stopped, keep your foot on the brake and step on the gas pedal. With an single cam motor you will have to time how hard to step on the gas and exactly when to let off of the brake. Whne you time it right the wheels will break loose and give you a good peel out.

Practice makes perfect

this wonderful technique someone pointed out will do the following,
one, rip the already weak upper engine mount, they are an item that takes the load of the engine and also dampen vibration, they break enough on their own, why speed up the process?
you will ruin your tranny, its an economy car, even the twin cam tranny is not like a corvettes, their simply not made to handle that kind of abuse.
you will ruin driveshaft's and c/v joints.
of course you will ruin tires
you will not gain speed pulling away from the light, when the tire are spinning you are losing traction and forward velocity.
if you want to smoke them with doing the least damage put some oil under the wheel, lock the parking brake and smoke your heart out.
still not good for the car but less stressful than the other method.
keep my # handy, your gonna need it! joe

Well said, Joey. That (hopefully) should put an end to this thread.

He didn't say that he wanted to be nice to his car!!!!
He just asked how to get the tires to smoke...I answered.

If he wanted to be nice to his car he wouldn't be trying to figure out how to peel out in the first place!!

I figured it's his car he can do with is what he want's!!! I just wouldn't do it to my cars!!! To each his own!!!

dont get defensive, i just wanted to point out to the young man that he could do some damage.
i'm with you fast928, i like to rip 'em up too! i just felt that it was someone young asking the question that might not know how bad it is to do a wheel stand (espicially if they havent done them, as you pointed out you have to let off at the right time, if he doesnt he's got all that torque pushing against the mounts, axles, etc.)
no harm meant, have a great night! i'm heading home, joe

Thanks all for sharing your knowledge & warnings. I appreciate it all. Later.

I have peeled out in my SL many times (most of the time not on purpose). From now on I will try not to, becuase of the damage it causes. And you can smoke the tires in a 92 SL manual I have laid my fair share of rubber!

I peel out about everytime I put my pedel down to the flore from a stop, and I have a 93 sl2. Its not very hard, but I don't recomend doing it very often, unless you want new tires.

Saturns were'nt made to smoke tires. It's highly un-reccomended and can't do any favors for your cars.

The brake & gas technique can only do more damage then it's worth.....

Buy a camaro or a trans am or a vette or something.

When I graduated from Highschool (last year), on the last day, we all got to school early and with some old tires we soaked them in bleach for a while, put them on the cars and trucks and when school was over.... :D

Actually it's very simple for me. I just just in car 4 (sig) and step on the gas. :dizzy:

Have you or any one ever done tray sliding, it is when you put a tray under your rear wheels and start driving and sliding with them on your car, My NCPOC club did this one time at Myrtle Madness which is a big Ford Probe event in november were about over 300 ford probes come to this event and take over myrtle beach SC

What's the point?? Sounds like its more driver ability there than the car....

i'm with terrandus. Whats the point? Anyway saturns are great for burning tires. it's amazing what an exhaust and intake can do for you. In fact i left a 42 ft. trail of marks just the other day. It just makes you feel good when you meet a car with traction controll. (i did buy new tires the next day). Any one ever uank the parking brake and drift? That's a blast!!!:grnjump:

I like to keep my tires and breaks (along with the rest of the car) in one piece as long as possible, although I'm dening anything either.........

Heh. Yes. Parking brake SLIDES are fun. They aren't drifts though. That would imply that your rear tires are spinning too fast because there is too much power going to them. And that ain't happenin' in a front wheel driver.

P.S. Don't pull that handle too much. You don't want to snap your e-brake cable. And, if you have rear discs, the rotors can crack fairly easily (I know this from experience).

Since I now drive a 2003 Corolla CE auto, (THAT I HATE), I have absolutely no qualms about beating the **** out of the car on occasion. I'm not saying I go driving offroad, but I have done numerous e-brake slides, 180's, and fishtailing. Four wheel drifts kick ass. Anyhoo, the point of this post is thus: Doing these things to your car in controlled conditions prepares you for when they happen in the real world, in traffic-filled roads. You'll know how to recover, from experience, not what some driver's ed book tells you.

(Although that's important too, since it gives you an idea on what you're supposed to do.... anyhoo)

Have fun, but everything in moderation.

go to a drag strip. put the front wheels in the burnout box and set the parking brake to hold the rear wheels. put it in gear and open the throttle to get it the tires to spin in the water. eventually you'll get some smoke. yes it's possible to do a burnout in a saturn. been there done that.

I can't speak to the auto tranny but my 97 SL will do bournouts if you really try (not that I would....) Not great, smoky ones, but a little bit anyway.

Once I added the front strut tower bar the wheel hop is prety much gone. Now I just have to put in the new motor mounts and see what it can really do!

I was rather pissed and lit the tires up for a good 5 secs or so in my VUE the other day.. left some good.. probibly 10 -12 feet long stripes out of the parking lot here. I didn't drop the clutch though... I was probibly doing 2500 RPMs, let the clutch out normally and stomped it while doing so...... it kinda suprised me that it would do that with the 16 inchers on it.

You want to burn rubber in your Saturn automatic?

Dump some gasoline on the tires and light a match.

(ask a stupid question. . .)

The day I drove my 2002 Saturn SL1 off the lot it was snowing (fresh snow). We went to the Gieco parking lot which had a lot of space and practiced driving on snow and pulling the steering wheel and the e-break slides. It was great!

In my first saturn I used to burn the tires all the time. My boyfriend taught me and it got addictive! :p I love my Saturn's!
Now I just can't wait till I get my sc2 back on the road!

I burn rubber all of the time in my 93 SL2. Get a Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch or a Clutch Master Stage 3 and aluminum flywheel and watch how easy it is to peel out!!

I currently have the Centerforce dual Friction with the Spec Aluminum Flywheel and Phantom Grip!! The Phantom Grip allows a uniform 2 tire spin out!! I rev it to 4 and peel out till the fuel cut off then do it again in second gear!! I love it but my FZ Toyo Proxes Dont!! Anyway, I have to share the fact that yes it is fun, and with the right equipment, things will not break as easily!!

So, In conclusion... Want a longer burn out upgrade to a performance clutch and pop the bizatch!! As far as automatic trannys....Dont know what to tell you!!!!
