Even when you look at the results for all the cars and see that the Saturn SC2 is the only really affordable car out there. I just wish I knew what they did to the engine! And if they are planning on selling it! Does anyone know if the suspension was stock or not?
WAY TO GO SATURN!!!
(Don't they still have a few days left of racing?)

Bruno:
Based on things I have read and seen on the web pages I have fingered through, the suspension is not stock. Actually, on this web page they give a good idea about suspension changes done to the car. I personally thought the car was on 17" rims and not 16", but it is hard to tell. I will be at Gingerman on Saturday for the wrap up event cheering them on. I will try and take a few mental notes and get back with you guys. I think Humpman and a few others have already scoured the cars over (even maybe leaving behind some drool), so I'm sure that the info given on this web page is relatively accurate.
One thing I found of interest in another thread. If Saturn has been planning for this event only 8 weeks, I don't think an engine like that could be engineered in that time. Either it has been under development for some time for another reason, or it is simply a bored out 1.9L with bolt on parts and some Electronic Wizardry. Either way, it would be available to the public (stock later or aftermarket NOW)! Unfortunately, my vehicle has the Lotus built 2.2L DOHC, and the aftermarket parts for it are not as readliy available to my knowledge. I'm sure SPS and others will have parts as soon as they get some time to fiddle around under the hood. That is when my sedan will get further love and attention. I heard that the Dodge Neon is back with a new engine. I also heard SC2 is still in 1st after the 1st run at Lime Rock this morning. Go Boys Go!!!

Jasper_LS1M - If my notes are correct, the SC2 only has 15" wheels. I wrote down, I think, that it was running on 225/50/15 Michelins. I don't know about suspension tweaks, though, although I think I did ask if it was lowered, and was told that it was not lowered.
The SC2 did have a cool silver and black Momo(?) shift lever though! Oh, it also had some mondo 4 wheel discs.
The LW2 is even more stock than the SC2 with the Saab 17" wheels, some exhaust mods, and I believe they said something about getting Koni shocks.
And just to clarify, the L850 2.2L that your LW1 has was built in Tonawanda, NY. The V6 in the LS2/LW2 is the one built in the former Lotus factory in England. The Opel Speedster, it is said, will also use the L850 and that is rumored to be turboed, so if that does come to pass, there will be some aftermarket L850 parts eventually, I hope.
The Lime Rock results are up, and the SC2 is holding on to 1st place in class (out of 8). Overall they are 34th out of the 113 entrants. They were very consistent in the two runs, coming in 28 and 29th. They seem to be in a bit of a dogfight with their only real class competition, the turbo Dodge Daytona.
The LW2 is holding on to 13th place in class (out of 21) and is 72nd overall. In their two runs at Lime Rock they finished in 78th and 62nd places overall.

Amazing! Steve's Day 6 report in his Daily Reports from the One Lap is up with the results from Lime Rock. Not only is there his second piece of video on the page, including sound, but he even has a picture with some babes in it! (Sorry, just had to plug that one!)
go to www.saturn.com and follow the One Lap link and then to Steve's Daily Report.

Most excellent results! I'll have to check out how the Saturn LW2 is doing against the VW Passat Wagon that I think is being run. If anyone gets a good look at that LW2, please let me know size tires (215s or 225s I'm guessing) are on those saab 17" wheels and any other details about what was done to the LW2.

LW2Rich - I'll quote what I wrote in the thread on "those wheels"
"I was at Virginia International Raceway yesterday and can report the following on the LW2
wheels. They indeed were Saab 17 inchers from (I believe) the Saab Aero 9-5. At any rate,
the Saturn Guys (great guys, in fact) ordered them directly from Saab. Turns out, when they
got them, they weren't the 17 inch Saab wheels that they really wanted, but it was too late
to change. They were wearing 225/45 Michelin street tires."
I don't believe any Passat Wagons were running the One Lap events. However, the people running the One Lap events were running a pair of Passat Wagons (VR6 5 speeds). Volkswagen is one of the sponsors of this year's event. I believe the LW2 is the only
station wagon in the One Lap this year.
To my knowledge, and I didn't ask too many questions, the LW2 being run in One Lap is largely stock. The wheels and tires are different, and the exhaust system has been heavily race modified. You can guess what that means. I think they did say they put Koni shocks on also. They also said they were running 93 octane fuel and letting the PCM learn how to run on it.
If you can, check out the video that Steve posted on his Daily Report of the LW2 making a screaming run... (www.saturn.com and follow the links to Day 6)

humpman... Thanks so much for the feedback! I originally missed that wheels thread that you posted to, so thanks for pointing that out to me. I was happy to see your info here and in the wheels thread becuase after a number of weeks of digging around for LS/LW tire/wheel info, I just put a set of 225/55-16 Bridgestone Potenza RE730s mounted on Borbet Type C wheels this Monday.
Offsets are indeed in issue when looking to put tires about 1" wider than the stock 205/65-15 Firstone Afiinity HPs on the LW/LS cars. I checked all over (my local Saturn dealer, Saturn corporate and the forums here) trying to find out the offset for the stock alloys on my LW2 to no avail. Turns out that when you remove the bolt cover from the stock alloys, that imprinted right into the wheels in between the wheel bolts is the wheel size (15 x 6) followed by a "45" (the offest in mm) right underneath that! Doh! Anyway, since I discovered this as I was putting on the new wheels/tires I was greatly relived. The Borbet type C wheels have 35mm (about .4" less than the stock alloys) offset and if wasn't for that extra space, there would most defintely be some rubbing going on.
I mention this becuase I saw in your posting in the LW2 Wheels thread that the reason why the Saturn One Lap crew went with the Saab wheels was becuase they had the same offset. Well, on the rear of my LW2 with the 225s on the Borbets there is at most about .4" between the rear tire inside sidewall and part of the rear strut. I can't see how a 225 wide tire on a wheel with the same offset as the sotck alloys will fit. Could the aftermarket struts they are using have somthing to do with it? I did some digging around on the web and found some technical info on the Saab 9-5 which seems to indicate (wheel/tire size info given without dimensions or saying what numbers are what) that the offset on the Saab wheels is 41mm. For me, if it wasn't for that extra space offered by the Bobret's smaller offset, I'm positive I would have been in trouble!
Again, thanks for the great info. Seeing a Saturn effort using 225 size tires on a LW2 definitely gave me some greater comfort that I made the right choice that 225s would work on the car without any fitment/rubbing issues.
P.S. I just checked out the sound/video clip of the LW2 screaming by.... Mine certianly doesn't sound like that! I wonder how many extra HP that kind of exhuast system is good for?
Best regards,
Rich (Dark Blue 2000LW2)

Uh-oh. The Nelson Ledges results are up, and the Dodge Daytona turbo has caught up. In fact, in Class Points, the SC2 is now 5 points behind. Ironically, in overall points, the SC2 is still in the lead by a tad.
If you read through the BBS comments at the official one lap site (www.onelapofamerica.com) one of the Daytona's drivers kind of objected to the SC2 even being in the econocar class, since it's price is greater than the $15,000 limit. As I have heard it, the reason the SC2 qualified for the econocar class is that that limit applies to the base price, and _if_ you consider the SC1 to be a form of a base model SC2, which is not implausible, then everything's kosher. There were also some comments (I don't know by whom) on the BBS that the Dodge Daytona was never really marketed as an economy car and that maybe it was in the wrong class.
The Dodge Neon which blew an engine or something like that in Atlanta, is back and seems to be running well again, but they are likely out of it because of the events they missed. The Daytona, I believe, did miss one event, or was late at least, and that was a big factor in enabling the SC2 to catch up.
The final runs at Gingerman may very well determine if the SC2 can pull it off.
The LW2 seems to be in its stable 13th place in class position.

Well, unfortunately the SC2 couldn't hold on to 1st place, but did finish the overall OLAP in a solid second, just 50 points behind the Dodge Daytona turbo. If the Saturn entries don't deserve Rookie of the Year honors, I'd like to know who was more deserving!
What hurt the SC2 was the fact that the Dodge Neon also got back in the race and since points seem to be awarded based on order of finish and not time differences, this began to exaggerate the point gains that the Daytona was making on the SC2. Of course, if only the SC2 could have beaten the other econocars straight up, and the point would have been moot! But for a pair of cars that didn't even exist 8 or so weeks ago, I think Saturn did a tremendous job and should have earned tons of respect from the "go-fast" car guys. I hope they get their deserved good write-up by Car and Driver, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.
The LW2 seemed to turn in very consistently impressive runs in a larger (21 car) class that had a very wide range of vehicles. I think finishing 13th in class is highly commendable, especially noting the competition, and the fact that it was the only station wagon in the entire event.
So overall, the SC2 finished 33rd and the LW2 finished 70th in a total field of 113 entrants.
In class, the SC2 finished 2nd out of 8 and the LW2 was 13th out of 21.
Bravo, Saturn!
