Purpose: some folks prefer to have their windshield wet before the wipers start wiping. some folks (like me) find out that the wiper motor control module is not turning on the washer pump anymore.
Preparation and supplies: Get a chilton's or other repair manual with electrical schematics. My 91-93 chiltons uses the same 'windshield wiper system schematic' figure for all the s series, so I think I have 'em covered up to 1993. If you have a more recent model, you will need to consult a schematic to verify you are looking at the right wires.
Take a look at my photo album.
Buy or collect these items:
Ordinary pliers.
One or two wire coat hangers.
Soldering iron or crimper.
Two 5-6 foot lenths of hookup wire, 18 or 20 guage (like wolfman said in another howto: speaker wire will work)
One momentary (normally open) pushbutton switch. I used radio shack part number 275-644 $2.39
Two squeeze wire taps that are for the size wire you are using. These can be found at radio shack 10 for $1.99 part no. 64-3052
Procedure:
1. Disconnect negative battery cable (I didn't bother with this, but don't sue me if you don't do it).
2. Find a wire bundle under the hood near the brake master cylinder that enters the firewall at the highest point. You should be able to open the split plastic sleeve and see five wires: Brown, Purple, Black, White and Pink. Note that this may be different on 1994 or later models (see above). Tap the pink wire with one of your hookup wires. Tap the white wire with the other hookup wire. Squeeze wire taps work by squeezing them with pliers. Hence the name.
3. Connect the battery cable. Strip the ends of the hookup wires and touch them together. Nothing should happen. Now, turn on the ignition switch and touch the stripped ends together. You should see (and possibly feel) the washer fluid spraying.
4. Disconnect the battery again.
5. Take apart your dashboard. On 91-93 S series, that means you take the two cover rectangles out of the top piece, take the screws out, pop out the clips on the rear edge of the top piece, and pull the front edge of the top piece backward out of the windshield clips. Then, take of the instrument panel cowl by removing some screws, and popping out some clips.
6. Mount the button in the dashboard. I put mine just to the right of the steering wheel. (I have pictures in my photo album).
7. Make a 5-6" "needle" out of a piece of wire coathanger and use it to thread the hookup wires through the firewall alonside the hood release pull cable.
8. Route your wires under the dashboard as you see fit. I ran them over the steering column to the right side of the steering column. Then I made another "needle" from a longer piece of wire coat hanger and pushed the hooked end down from the area near the steering wheel to the area near the brake pedal. I threaded the wires into the coathanger hook and pulled the coathanger up and out with the wires following behind.
9. Crimp or solder the wires to the pushbutton. Polarity doesn't matter.
10. Connect battery and test (see step 3, but push the button instead of touching the wires).
11. Put your dash back together.
12. If you are a Dave Chappell fan, call it your "R. Kelly button"
