Help! TSB# 030864030 (Window Tint Scratches)
Can anyone tell me what the full TSB says?
Is there anyone who works at Saturn that can tell me what saturn's official response is?
I went to the service dept. to ask about the felt window seals, told them I was about to get my windows tinted and didn't want them to get scratched, and that I thought there was a TSB on it...
The guy told me he'd never heard of that problem, that i'd be fine, but if I really felt concerned they could change the window strips for me (for a parts and labor $$$ of course)...
I know i've heard several on here say they had saturn replace their window seals with felt, and some even said they repaid the amount to get the window tint redone...
Now i've got streaks galore, and i'm a bit pissed cause everyone's acting like it's not there problem.
The tinting place told me not to worry about scratches that it shouldn't scratch, but if it did saturn would redo it, and saturn's just acting like it's not their problem either.
I haven't had the tint but two months and now i've got enough scratches to drive me nuts.

It's the ION that uses the teflon inner seals that usually have to be replaced by felt seals to prevent scratching. The VUE already has the felt seals. No wonder he didn't know what you were talking about.

As suggested in this thread:
http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php3?s=&threadid=32921&highlight=window+tint
I inquired to my dealer and told them that I was looking into getting my tinting done. I told them I had heard of a TSB (#03-08-64-030) and ask them to check on it. I told them that it was to replace the seals with teflon lined ones or something.
Like I said, I gave them the TSB number and they researched it. After researching, they called me back and said that I was dead on. If I wanted the work done, he'd put a note in my file on the computer telling the tech or whomever I made the appointment with what the service request was in reference to this TSB...
Seemed like a non-issue to me. I haven't had the work or the tint done yet, but at least my ducks are in a row.
Take the above mentioned TSB to them and ask them to look it up. Go there just as an inquiry and see what they say. Once they pull it up, they should have no option other than to perform the work.
Good luck.

Just called my Saturn dealer and advised them of the TSB. They were aware of it and ordered the parts for me. Made an appointment to have it repaired this Friday(Good Friday). Covered under Warranty :) Thanks everyone. What a great forum !!!!

VUEs use 2 different seals. Those of us with 2002 and early to mid 2003 VUEs have felt seals, later models have teflon seals.

I have a 2003 (purchased in June), not sure of the production date. My tint is scratched top to bottom. I may follow up with the TSB suggested before.

The production date will be at the top of one of the stickers either on the driver's front or rear door.

I had the same problem. My tinted windows got all scratched up. Saturn replaced with the felt and also retinted my car for free. They are going back to the felt by the way. The late 2003 and early 2004 models have the teflon. A friend of mine with a 2003 built in March 2003 had felt. I had teflon, mine was built in June 2003. Another friend of mine has a 2004 built in January 2004 with Felt. I hope this helps.

My Saturn service manager is saying the tint isn't their problem because it's an aftermarket item I had done. They even tried saying it was the tinter's fault, that the tinter may have switched the window seals for the teflon ones...
As if.
I was there watching the tint guys when they installed my tint- they didn't do anything funny.
Now i'm starting to get pissed. I hope they don't expect me to keep speaking highly of them. I may have to recommend the next guy that likes my Vue to go get a Toyota. And I hope they know my next service review will be terrible if they don't get their act together.
Here all this time everybody at Saturn of G'town has been calling me "Mr. Saturn" because of the amount of love and evangelizing i've been doing for saturn.

I recently went to the Saturn dealer for my 6,000 mile service and pointed out that my tints were getting scratches, and the TSB was supposed to help. The dealer was only able to replace the passenger side because the driver side piece was packaged incorrectly.
There was additional damage to the tints due to the swap, and I can still see where the new piece is still rubbing the tints. I am hoping that this will be eliminated with some use. I was going to retint the glass anyway, so I'd like to get all the bugs out with the current application.
However, if you are thinking of tinting your Vue.... Get the TSB done before you do the glass, and make sure it is seated properly on the door!!!!

Just had the TSB done on my 2004 Vue. All covered under warranty. Told dealer I would be tinting and wanted it replaced BEFORE it scratched. They understood and ordered the parts. Installation time was 2 hours.
Called tint place for price quote and they advised me the Vue's were having problems. Interesting he knew not only about the problem but also the fix. I guess word travels fast.
My suggestion is to have Saturn fix it FIRST. Call another dealer if they are not cooperating. Saturn Service does know about it whether they admit it to you or not.

It is strange that dealers are handling this TSB differently.
I went to my dealer service guy and told him that I plan to have my windows tinted. I would like to have the window seals replace.
He told me that he knows about this TSB. However, he can not replace the seals unless he sees scratches on the tint.
He said that not all Vue require new seals. Saturn does not want to replace the seals unless there is a problem. Saturn will pay for the re-tint if neccessary.
BTW, I just had my Ion window seals replaced. I will have to get it re-tint. Saturn will re-imburse me later.

Does anyone know when the 2004 Vues were replaced with the felt???

The service manager at my dealer told me the same thing as they said to "Warren 38".He told me they would replace the seals only if the tinting is already scratched and would pay to have the windows retinted. It is not a policy for Saturn to do what he called "preventive maintenance".I think I am lucky enough to have the felt seals,so that I don't have to bring my Vue again for service. My vue was built in Dec.02.It is a 2003 model.

Seems like a crazy policy. Wait for scratches to happen then replace both. Doesn't that end up costing them more in the long run? I would think only those who want tint would have it changed anyway.

I checked my 2004 it has felt but since the rear door windows are now factory tinted on the 2004 it doesn't matter.

I just picked up my new Vue today and took the TSB# to the service mgr. He was not aware of the problem of the scratched window tint problem. He enered the TSb, printed out same and told me "YES" you will have to have the "Felt trim installed. He was very couteous and set up an appointment for me for Thursday, 7:00A:M. He said it would probably take about two hours to replace the two front side windows {trim, that is}.
I live in Florida most of the year except for a few summer months spent in NJ and "window tint" is a no brainer.
I want to thak all of you for this info, as I was going to have my windows tinted next week. This installation of the felt trim will eliminate the possible scratch problem. THANKS

It would still matter, because the factory tint is sandwiched between two pieces of glass, not actually on the outside of glass. Because the factory tint is between the two pieces of glass, it's much more resilent to scratches...
I only wish I could find someone who could do the factory style tint job on my front windows.

nortsr, both the front and rear windows have felt, but they also have a rubber wiper that looks like a front windshield wiper, so it may still scratch the window tint.
fotovue, what I ment was that the rear door windows alread have factor tint so do you need to add more tint. By the way I do know what tint is as an aftermarket add on. I have had 2 VW's as well as my wifes Scion tinted and also have added to my motorhome on the front winshield to bring the eyebrow tint down lower.
