A very, very tricky one. Possibly "Telegraph Road" by Dire Straits - the 14 minute long 1st track on their "Love Over Gold" album. I love hearing that whole album when I drive actually!

Other favorites: REM: Losing My Religion
Coldplay: Clocks
Red Hot Chilli Peppers: The Zephyr Song

I could go on forever!

The other morning I heard "Living on Borrowed Time" by Styx; one of those songs that makes you just want to stand on it! I did donuts in a parking lot in a 3000GT VR4 to "Dirty White Boy" by Foreigner. "Cowboy Song" by Thin Lizzie is another good one. Cruizin' the beach with "California Dreamin'" or "Low Rider" by War, or blasting down some back roads to Rush, Jimi Hendrix, Boston...the list just goes on and on!

1. anything by 311, Rage Against the Machine, etc... I have an official theme song of my car, actually... it's 311's "Down" (on their self titled album)
2. techno (not the stupid 70s crap, but the good ****)
3. hip hop
4. soundtrack from XXX, any of Matrix movies, F&F, etc.

Basically anything that makes people go "Holy @#$%$# what was that!?" as I drive by. :) A system is a beautiful thing.

Audioslave! I belive that it is the most perfect overall driving album ever made. With "Show Me How to Live" as my own personal theme song.

Otherwise, I always listen to the "Endless Summer II" soundtrack while racing. It helps me to calm down and concentrate.

I think the Matrix theme is another great driving song. Although it does inspire speeding... ;)
The song's real title is "Spybreak! (A Short One)" by the Propellerheads, if you wanna look for it. I can send it to you over AIM (Instant messenger), I have like 8000 songs. My SN is sexymexigoddess7.

I am not a huge fan or rap but there is a song by Ludacris called "Move B@$*!" A friend of mine was playing the cd one time while I was in his car and suddenly the song had a whole new meaning while driving. If you hate people driving slow in the fast lane give this song a try. Ha!!

Haha!! As I was reading the title to this thread, I was thinking that my favorite highway driving song is Republica "Ready to Go", then I opened the thread and look at that! :p LOL! They made a techno version?!?! I've got to find that! Let's see, after "Ready To Go," I'd have to say...

Dirty Vegas "Days Go By" (I enjoy listening to this while driving my aunt's '02 Galant ;) :D)
Aqua "Roses Are Red"
Billy Joel "The Stranger"
Britney Spears "Outrageous" and "You Drive Me Crazy" (the "Stop" remix)
Michelle Branch "Are You Happy Now," "Breathe" (the entire remix CD single), "Love Me Like That," and "The Game of Love"
Sheryl Crow "Steve McQueen"
Eve 6 "Inside Out," "On the Roof Again" and "Promise"
Evan & Jaron "Crazy For This Girl"
Eagles "Hotel California"
Shania Twain "Gonna Getcha Good" ("Up!" is a great album, BTW)
Stacie Orrico "There's Got To Be More To Life"
Something Corporate "I Woke Up in Car"
The Ataris "Boys of Summer"
Maroon 5 "Harder To Breathe"
Andrea Bocelli "Con Te Partido" (It's Italian opera)
Bob Guiney "Girlfriend"
Bon Jovi "Living on a Prayer"
Bowling For Soup "Punk Rock 101"
And while I'm not a big fan of hip-hop or rap either, I've got to admit to *kind of* liking Jay Z "Can I Get A," Outkast "Hey Ya," and Lil' Kim "Jump Off"

I guess that would be all, for now anyway. :dizzy:

OK, I may get a lot of flack for this, but I will admit what I listen to on a road trip. Whenever I go to my Grandma's in Oklahoma, I listen to *Nsync's self-titled album and No Strings Attached (UK Special Edition). On the way home, I listen to the Celebrity album. After that, I have started playing Simple Plan's album No Pads, No Helmets...Just Balls. It is fairly routine.

SpyBreak kicks @ss when screaming down the highway! I also like "Clubbed to Death (Kyriamo (sp?) Remix)". I also enjoy "Mona Lisa Overdrive" and "Chateau Fight Scene" (okay, so I don't think that is the actual name, but that's the scene it is played during:D)on Reloaded sound track.

Other favorites include such musical tour de forces such as:

"Cars" cover by Fear Factory
"Wait and Bleed" Slip Knot
any song by Korn
"Head Like a Hole" NIN
"Sin" NIN
"Closer to God" NIN (including the remixes)
RATM anything
"Du Hast" Ramm Stein
"1965" White Zombie (Think this is the name, whatever track 1 on the Greatest Hits is)
"Brick House" remake by Rob Zombie featuring Lionel Richey
"More Human than Human" White Zombie
"Learning to Fly" Foo Fighters
"Amigone" Goo Goo Dolls
"Iris" Goo Goo Dolls
"The World that I Know" Collective Soul
"Hella Good" No Doubt

actually...the list goes on and on. As I have no real musical genre that I favour, I listen to whatever I am in the mood for (can range from Classical Music to Genesis (the older the better), Police, White/Rob Zombie, KoRn, NIN, De Peche Mode, New Wave 80s, some techno...etc etc etc)

Excellent choice,

Pleasant summer drive: Beethoven's 6th symphony
Curvy country highway: Holst the Planets, Mars the god of war movement
Ugly city driving: Guns and Roses
Boring High way: Rush most of their middle period.
On my motorcycle: The sound of my engine is the only song I need.

Ton of songs I like listening to. For driving, I much prefer songs with a driving beat and/or loudness to them. In your face songs work, too. :D
There's a local jazz station (KPLU) that's great, but to me the jazz played during the day tends to be too smooth. I need more kick, which is why I like the blues they play in the evening.
Some specific songs I really like while driving:
AC/DC--Back in Black, Hell's Bells
Clapton--Layla (the original, not the '92 remake)
Eagles--Get Over It
Montgomery Gentry--Hell Yeah
Garth Brooks--Friends in Low Places
Various Michelle Branch, like "Are You Happy Now?", though I have a hard time now listening to Michelle without picturing that Maxim photo shoot she did. ;)
Various Sheryl Crow
Chicago--Saturday in the Park
Plus a bunch more

as twincam stated: its Speed Racer. I never saw a ton of them but I thought it was great back in the day. A few months ago I saw one and it was just hilarious. Racer X and Speed had to team up. Racer X was blind or something like that and Speed had to call out course headings like: '62 degrees right, 12 degrees left', it was just hilarious!

How could I have forgotten Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride?!?!" :dizzy: That's an awesome song, one of the few songs that my parents and I both like. I especially like driving to the remixed version by FatBoy Slim, it's sort of a Dance version, I guess (that version my mom HATES). A few others I like to listen to that I forgot are,

GG DiAgostino "I'll Fly With You"
BBMak "Always Know Where You Are"
David Bedingfield "James Dean (I Wanna Know)"
Daft Punk "One More Time"
Goo Goo Dolls "Long Way Down" (my 1 1/2 year old nephew loves listening to that song in the car too :p )
Keith Urban "Where the Blacktop Ends"
No Doubt "Hella Good"
Red Hot Chili Peppers "Otherside"
Simple Plan "I'd Do Anything"
Vertical Horizon "Everything You Want"
Lindsay Buckingham "Holiday Road" (reminds me of a road trip, because it's from the "National Lampoon's Vacation" movies)

I think that's about it (again :D), for now anyway.

Reading these selections makes me feel OLD. OK, here goes:

Downtown -- Petula Clark
Kokomo -- Beach Boys
Bad Moon on the Rise (or "Bathroom on the Right")-- Creedence
Trumpet Concerto in E-flat -- Johann Nepomuk Hummel (esp. the last movement)
Overture to "La Gazza Ladra" ("The Thieving Magpie") -- Gioacchino Rossini
Egmont Overture -- Ludwig van Beethoven
Born to Be Wild works also
Any "stupid" song (e.g., "Stupid Cupid," "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah," "Hanukkah in Santa Monica," "Witch Doctor Song," etc.)
Any song of which I know a parody (because I sing it, to everyone's chagrin)

My wife goes for lite rock; that's when she drives and I get to sleep. She sings well, though.

Rush...is...good. Only band my wife and I pay to see in concert (and travel for). If my "Rush in Rio" DVDs were VHS, I would have worn them out already. Oct 21 of last year, we were at the theater watching a big screen preview of RnR. Vapor Trails (Atlanta) was the best show yet! Pushing 50 and these guys have lost nothing!

My original Rush collection (Rush - Moving Pictures) was on 8-track tape. MP was my first LP. Even when I listen to the older stuff on CD, I can still sometimes remember when a song used to fade in the middle...and then cla-clank (next track)...and then the song would fade back in. Wasn't 8-track kwell?

Oh man, I hope my home state doesn't press charges against Alex. It may mess up the upcoming 30 year anniversary tour as he could possibly lose his visa. BTW, I misspelled Neil "Pert" in another thread. Stupid editing time limit!

Favorite driving song? Hank Williams Jr. "Dixie on My Mind".

Second favorite? Hmm... Alabama's "Southern Star". I would have said "Dixieland Delight", but that's too many Dixie's.

For a slower groove, a live version of Willie Nelson's "Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground", or maybe "Seven Spanish Angels" (not live).

I can't make up my mind. I'll just say anything Rush.

One more thing! LOL!

Someone mentioned a song from Styx "Cornerstone". Freggin' love that CD as well as all of the others (Equinox being my favorite, Paradise a close second). Someone mentioned Metallica's "Load". Nice to see it get credit for a change, I like Load/Reload as well as Puppets and Lightning. S&M my favorite.

Guns n Roses. Foreigner's "Double Vision", "Head Games", and "4". Damn, too many. Am I the only one who likes Boston's third release as much as the first two?

I'll need these in a couple of hours, driving 2 1/2 hrs to Disney. I'll need some real wake up music...ZZ Top!

Rush in Rio is awesome! The sound is a bit funky on 5.1 mode. I almost like the interviews better than the show!

My wife and I drove to see rush in Milwaukee on the first leg of the VT tour. Best show I have EVER seen out of 100's of concerts. Plus I had been drinking and eating Italia-fest food all day. :dizzy: I have that one on DVD from a crowd digi-cam. ;) I have a whole harddrive devoted to Rush A/V boots. They were the first band I saw live, I was 13. My dad plays drums, naturally I play drums.

If you havent read Ghost Rider, I HIGHLY suggest it. It really lets you into the life of Neil.

If you havent heard The Mars Volta, check it out. You Rush fans will probably dig it. Im nuts over it.

Good to see that there are fellow Rush fans out there.
I agree that 2112 is by far their best.
My first impression of them was a concert I saw at a local high school in 1975. It was one of their first with "new",drummer, Neil Peart. They played their entire first 2 albums (that's all they had out at the time) and ran out of songs to play. They played the Beatle's "Bad Boy" for their final encore.

I have seen them 4 times since then & they remain one of my favorite bands. How can only 3 people make that much noise?

pantera isn't true metal. true metal isn't played on the radio or anything.

Hatebreed would be good.
Testament- good too
Spineshank- the first half of HEight of Callusnous(sp?) that feels good

mars_volta,

Yeah, Rush in Rio is pretty awesome! The documentary was a long wait for us Rush fans, although I respect anyone's privacy if they want to live outside of the "Limelight". It was very nice seeing their offstage personalities. I haven't listened to RinR on 5.1 mode yet, but I've read some disappointing threads about it, as well as the sound quality of the RinR audio CDs which I have yet to purchase. My only gripe is that you have to play games to get to "Anthem 1975". It's a great video as it predates any videos on my "Chronicles" DVD. They weren't trying to win any beauty contests in those days, that's for sure.

I haven't been to too many concerts in my lifetime: 1) Alabama "Roll On", 2) ZZ Top "Recycler" 3) Pink Floyd "The Division Bell" 4) Eagles "When Hell Freezes Over" 5) Van Halen "Balance" 6) Rush "Roll The Bones", "Counterparts", and "Vapor Trails". That's about it and as close to the order that I can remember.

The last Rush show was by far my favorite, though I knew some of the others were probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I mean, hearing Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety can hardly be toped except for maybe hearing it again with the return of Roger Waters. And then, having a seat about 15 rows from Joe Walsh is something else entirely. Hotel California may be worn out but what a way to open a concert!

Back to Rush, we goofed and missed Test for Echo. Only after buying "Different Stages" (concert CD) did I realize that I missed the entire A-side of 2112. I might never forgive myself for this blunder, and the possibility that it could have been their last tour.

Neither my wife nor I are very religious or uptight (our religious [or rather, non-religious] views are much like Neil Peart's in his lyrics) but she might have been a little uncomfortable at the Van Halen concert. Lots of nudity (though mild) and a little vulgarity. Rush is something entirely different. No antics, just good musicianship and she appreciates that. Yeah, Geddy dropped a couple of "F" bombs in the documentary, but so do I sometimes when I can't find my shoes. :) The concerts are squeaky clean though, and that's nice to see as I've noticed so many fathers now bringing their children to show them what music was like in their day.

"Ghost Rider - Travels On The Healing Road" - Neil Peart is the first book I've ever read where the subject wasn't cars or military aircraft. I bought it at the VT concert ($19.95) and stayed up at a friends house until 4:30 the next morning reading it. My wife graciously drove us home (Atlanta to Jacksonville) so that I could keep reading. My father rides a similar but older BMW cruiser and is also the outdoorsy type, so I know he'd be interested in reading it. My only disappointment was the minimal Rush references but that's not what the book was about. After reading the book, I appreciated the Vapor Trails CD allot more.

You're a drummer? Wasn't it neat watching Neil warm up on that little practice set? I've never heard of "Mars Volta" and I will check it out.

UNKLE BIK, "3 people make that much noise" because a) they're that good, and b) sometimes they cheat a little. Ged can't play keys and bass at the same time so he sometimes triggers pre-recorded keys during a song. His bass playing is much more important than keyboards unless a song is really keyboard heavy, then he plays the keys (with no bass that I've heard). It's just the keyboard filler that they sometimes cheat on, I believe.

Is this acceptable at a live concert? Not with any other band, IMO. For example, I didn't mind that a couple of musicians were helping out David Gilmore, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright (obviously an extra had to play bass on stage). It's live and I want to hear it live by live musicians. But Rush is somehow different. Having a 4th person on stage is unacceptable. Having another musician offstage is still unacceptable. All music has to be only from those three, even if they have to cheat a little. But even their "cheats" keep them very busy. Also, I don't mind other bands straying a little from the studio CD. But with Rush, I want to hear it as it sounds on the CD. The musicianship is just that impressive.

Holy crap I wrote a long post!

Hate to say it but live 2112 was the end all be all...I live my entire teenage years waiting to see that live. When they went into 'Discovery' after 'Temples', I knudged my friend and said "This is it! This is it! They are gonna do it!!!" 2112 in its entirety. Wow.

there's things that make metal what it is.(i missed explaining) pantera is heavy metal(i have all their cd's), but not true to the roots. metal is for the fans, and i don't remember this being phil anselmo. hey i've got a vast collection of metal, of 300cd's at least half are metal, most types, minus glam. the rest are hard rock. that's my two cents, i failed to write this before.
opinion you have your's, i have mine.

mars_volta, this isn't bad (a little weird maybe, but then so is The Necromancer as you pointed out)...
http://www.marsvolta.com/index_main.html

Homebase, you mentioned King Crimson and Dream Theater. A friend of mine who knows I'm a Rush fan told me I should give these bands a listen. I still need to do so. There was a sorta Rush sounding 3-piece I liked years ago named Zebra.

UNKLE BIK, I just realized that you said you saw Rush at a high school! How lucky are you??? That must have been around the time they made the "Anthem 1975" video on Rush in Rio. Wow!

mars_volta again, I knew I wasn't going to get all of 2112 at the VT show because I already knew the set list, but that would have freaked me out! Once they continued playing 2112 after Temples, you just KNEW they were going to do the whole thing! I really missed out. BTW, I'm watching the video from "Inertiatic ESP" as I type this post and the Mars Volta drummer is really good.

BTW, my favorite driving CD when I'm going to the beach or driving along the FL coast is Donald Fagan "The Nightfly" and my Steely Dan box set named "Citizen Steely Dan 1972-1980". Don't know why, it's just good beach music.

April 1975, Chanel High School, Bedford, Ohio. (right across the street where Halle Berry went to high school 2 years later) Tickets were $4.00 & many were counterfited. Some people had to be turned away.

I wasn't try to dis Rush for making "noise". What I meant is summed up by what you have said. I think its amazing that Geddy can play a double-neck guitar, footpedals, & sing at the same time. Heck, I have a hard time turning the radio station while driving!
As for King Crimson, they are another "thinking man's rock-n-roll band." If you can, see if you can find, "A Young Child's Guide to King Crimson." this is great collection of Robert Fripp era Crimson. The liner notes are interesting, also. They even got better when they added Adrian Belew in the 80's.

Zebra! How did I forget about them? Can I edit my original post?!? My wife and I dug up "Who's Behind the Door" and "tell me what you want". They sound GREAT in our new Vue! :) We also found a live cover version of "A Farewell to Kings" by Zebra. Rough quality, but neat to hear a different band cover Rush's music.

HomeBase,

Zebra did a Rush cover? How cool is that? I had their original tape in the 80s. I've been looking for this Hits of sorts CD and can't find it in music stores, so I guess I just need to order it online...

I've also been meaning to order The Producers for nostalgic reasons (first "concert" I ever saw - at a State Fair in the early 80s)...

Indeed it is I thought I remember it being split into an a/b as far as track list goes. But then again I have the remaster so who knows what futzing has occurred with the track;)

Listened to Inna Godda Davida (In the Garden of Eden) and Smoke on the Water in my car last night on the way back to my apartment from my parents place, I have decided these are two of the most dangerous songs to listen to as I began to unwitting speed...a lot.
