Well, I like having animated avitars. They're lots of fun. But they're pretty much impossible to get down to the alloted size. I tried to point it to my home webserver, but it says the file size is too big. (it's 277k)

Is there a way that avatars can actually be hosted off the site, so that we can use larger sized files? It won't take up any more room on your servers, Charlie. I think it's a good idea. That way I don't have to keep bugging you to change my avatar for me. :p (I think that's the only reason my current one works.. it's a pretty big file.) It just doesn't make sense to download them to the server when it can just point to another site.

If they're hosted on another site then every time an avatar loads it has to contact that site to pull it in. That slows things down quite a bit, especially if the other site happens to be down.

I'm reluctant to allow larger avatar uploads because of the extra load that puts on the server -- whether its mine or someone elses. I try to make sure that SaturnFans pages load as fast as possible, and if everyone has large avatars that will really slow things down. On a case by case basis, however, I will review and upload a special avatar for a member if its not too large. Email me the graphic to me at webmaster@saturnfans.com and I'll take a look at it.
