Are you right or left handed?

I'm predominately right handed, but can do many things with my left, although I can't write with my left. Even though, I don't think I would qualify, perhaps there should be an "ambidextrious" option?

I write on a chalkboard with my right though.

Interesting article.

The right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, as well as creative problem solving, and math and artistic ability. It will be interesting to see how many SaturnFans members are left hand dominant, since this population appears to be skewed toward more than casual computer users, and computer professionals. In my chosen profession, Systems Programming, the distribution is about 50/50 (totally unscientific data based on many years of team lunches where we would put all the lefties on one side of the table so folks were not bumping elbows :-). When I was an application programmer many years ago the percentage of lefties was closer to 10% which is my guesstimate for the general population.

I am right handed for most things but also right-brained: in school I had better scores in math and was interested in drawing from a very early age. Before my career working with computers I was a graphic artist (I also have an Art History degree with a minor in Fine Arts).

I write with my left. Anything intricate like writing, including using a small paintbrush or a soldering iron is left. I do everything else with my right usually. I use my computer mouse with the right. If I was using a large paintbrush to paint a fence or something, it would be the right. I pitch with the right, shoot with the right, use a fork with the right, although sometimes I will switch hands while eating. Long story behind how that all happened. Weird, eh?

I agree, because I am. I can write with my left hand. I can only print well with my left though. I can throw, I can wrench, I can write, and I can catch my kids (lol) with my left hand just as well as with my right.
I choose my right hand more because the world revolves around people who are right handed. I don't have a problem with that though I do feel for people who are left handed and have to work with materials made for right handed people.. Uggh.. Like some of the machines at work. I know they'd drive me nuts if I was left handed. hehehehe:dizzy:

I'm both. I was left-handed until the teachers in elementary school forced me to use my right hand for everything. They’d spank me, send me to detention, not let me go to recess, and even make me skip lunch (if I was eating with my left they’d take my food away) if they caught me using my left hand. They even encouraged my classmates to be spies… So even if the wicked witches didn’t see me, some brat would tell them and they’d punish me anyway. Basically, it was as if the entire school was my bully. I got in trouble numerous times, not because I used my left hand, but just because the kids found humor in the teachers tormenting me.

Now I predominately use my right hand for everything, but I use my left when ever possible.

About three months ago I responded to a call about an elderly woman falling and breaking her arm, and it turned out to Mrs. Sullivan, the meanest, most anti-left-hand teacher I ever had. So now that the ball was on the other foot, I antagonized her as I treated her. I began by asking her if she remembered me, and she did, so I explained to her that I was going to use my left hand to treat her, and if she didn’t like it she could refuse care and walk herself the four blocks to the hospital. She decided left-handed was better as long as helped her. The biggest joy- She broke her right arm in three places and had to use her left hand for everything!!!

:D

Of course, what they say about vengeance being bittersweet is true. The whole time I felt sorry for her, and wished I hadn’t been so mean to her.

I put down lefty, since I write with that hand and people typically refer to being a lefty or righty by associating it with their writing hand.

Question though: Is anyone a right hand writer but then a lefty at everything else???

Then I am a righty, only can write with that hand.
But for most other things, I can use both no problem....even do shifting in a right-hand drive manual car, while my trip in Europe

Well, it's not all that bad, don't feel sorry for lefties. Usually what happens is that we do choose a preference for one hand over the other at a very young age. But, as we grow older we learn to do many things right handed. For example, I'm a lefty, but don't ask me to play a left-handed guitar or violin, both of which I play right-handed, simply because that's how I originally learned to play them. But other things, for example, most scissors are made to fit the right hand. But I have learned to cut with both hands. As far as writing goes, I can write with my right-hand, but it's not nearly as neat about it as my left.

As far as genetics are concerned, yes, I believe that there's a genetic predisposition that determines what hand a child will favor. If the mother and father are both right-handed, the chances that their children will also be right handed are somewhere in the 80-90 percentile range. If one parent is left-handed, and the other is right, the chances that their child will be left handed is 50-50. So on and so forth. I have a lot of lefties in my family, so I guess I'm one of those 50-50 lefties. My mother is a righty, dad's a lefty. My brother was a right-handed. I also believe that being a lefty or righty may very well also be determined by the strength of one parents genes over the other parents genes.

A note on the article that was previously provided: True, teachers, in the past, also had definate influence on the use of the right-hand. My mother would have been left-handed by the age of 5 if it weren't for one cruel teacher that would whack her left hand with a ruler when she wanted to write with it, teaching her that it is wrong to use the left. Do any of you know if this kind of stuff still goes on with children in schools? Just curious.

I am right handed and my brother is left handed. We don't sit together at the dinner table, well we didn't when we used to eat together at home ... that was quite a few Ions (eons actually) ago. I can't think of any other real problems I had with south paws ... when it came to girls though ....

You know... I watched a two hour long movie about Jane Goodall, and she said chimps tend to be left-handed. So that article might not entirely be true!

P.S. I'm a righty. Though I can write decently with my left hand. Probably because I'm a violist and have very good control of my left hand from it.

I'm equally klutzy with both hands.

A guy I used to work with could write stuff with both hands simultaneously... but he could also do one in cursive and the other in block letters... upside down.

Hard to believe unless you actually saw him do it.

I'm left handed ..... but due to lack of left-handed facilities, i was forced to cut right handed in kindergarden. I mouse with my right hand, since most desktops are configured this way. But those are the only two exceptions.

Some people argue that lefties are "inferior" to right handed people, etc. but what a bunch of BS.

**OFF TOPIC**

That is so true. A buddy of mine failed just about everything there was until the school bought a Trash 80. Next thing, his dad buys him an Apple. Still could not pass anything but computer class. Goes to UC (Davis I believe) and has been with Microsoft since 1990. Worth a freaking fortune but still probably ain't the best at geography or history. Oh well - there is the real world and there is academic success. The key is to balance the two.
