View Full Version : Wires melting into the battery

A few weeks ago my son's Vue broke the positive wire at the terminal. Replaced the wire ends, new clamp, back up and running. The other day it stopped running while he was driving, just died going down the road. He pulled it home and looking under there the positive wire is melted into the battery deeper than the wire is thick, and there's a hissing noise coming from the fuse box under the passenger dash panel. We unhooked it, he got a new battery, we start the car and within one minute the positive wire is too hot to touch. Even the shrink wrap was starting to melt.

What might cause this?

positive cable is shorted to ground. Follow the cable as far as it is hot. Where it changes from hot to ambient temp is were it is likely shorted to ground.

The fuse block end is decidedly ambient temp, but the wire runs under and is pinned in under the fuse block. The Haynes manual does not tell you how to take the octopus out of the block, so we can't get the tray out to inspect the entire wire, however, there is what looks like battery terminal corrosion under the fuse block. What I'm going to do is go get a new battery wire and terminals and just bypass the oem to see if that fixes it.

Little doubt that the cable was shorted to ground somewhere......but without concise comments from the OP, we will never know for sure.
