Did you buy your Saturn new or used? If you bought it used, was it a "certified" used Saturn?

Should I click 3 "used" and 1 "new"?

My 1996 SL1 was purchased used, by my family in October of 1998 with 41,000 miles on the odometer. It wasn't certified by Saturn, as we bought it from a Chrysler dealer. I don't ever want to purchase a used car again, except possibly from a Saturn retailer (certified). While I love my Saturn, I had a nightmare experience with it not knowing about the head gasket recall, and neither I nor my family knew that we had to register with Saturn Corp. in order to get recall information, etc. With a used car, you never really know how the car was (if at all) taken care of. My mechanic told me that my Saturn may have even taken on water before we bought it, as the wiring harness and firewall had water damage, and that the frame of the car may be bent. I was actually quite reluctant about buying the car at the time because the saleslady knew nothing about it(I was only 14, so nobody listened to me); she didn't even know it was on the inventory. Anyhow, while we did have a pretty severe problem with our Saturn, it was all solved after about a year, and it is running really well (knock on wood, save for the possible coolant and oil leaks I wrote about in another post!), and I would never trade it in for anything!

We bought our 1999 SW2 used last April from a Saturn dealer in Manassas, VA. It had 21,000 miles at the time and now has about 33,000. So far (besides a broken engine mount) it's been a good little car. Many thanks to the good people on this message board for their valuable advice with tis purchase.

My first Satty, 1996 SL2 was used but only had 8,200 km. Drove it to 90,000 km. My second one, 2000 LS1, was demo and had 3,500 km when I bought it. Drove it to 59,000 km. Bought my 2002 Black Silver FWD VTi VUE spanking new.

Sounds like a graduated Saturn experience, huh?! :D

My SL2 was bought new to replace a Ford Escort that racked up 100K miles in five years. However, it will be the last new car I buy for awhile. I might look into a used/certified L-Series sedan (or wagon) with the V6.

Used, a private owner. I don't think this one will go anytime soon, but for my next car, I'll probably get a 3rd-generation SC2 used. I'd like a 3-door:D

This was my first new car purchase. The dealership had it brought in from a sister dealership just for me to test drive because it was that closest one that had what I wanted on it. Evidently I am either wierd or too picky. So, It had 92 miles when I signed the papers.

4 months later - no regrets so far.
And only 58 more payments to go. . . . . :whoa:

I traded in My 87 Honda Accord on a new '93 Saturn SL1, and traded that in on a new '97 SL1, an sold that and put the proceedes down on a new 2000 LS2 (now Called an L300), and traded that on a new 2002 SC2. No problems with the S-series, but I can't say the same for the "L".

Bought mine new. I like the fact that I knew I was first and only driver of my car (plus that overrated new car smell) but when I saw how saturated the used car market is I wished I would've bought slightly used. The problem with buying used from a retailer is they usually slap you with some high interest.

I'm still happy with my purchase. :grnjump:

I bought my '93 SC2 used from a Chrysler dealer almost a year ago. I've only put 5k miles on it since I bought it. Right now I'm torn between selling it and buying a motorcycle, or customizing it.

Right now the SC2 is a blank canvas. It needs new struts (so why not replace the springs with them?), new exhaust, new tires and brakes. So I can buy some fun stuff to replace these with.

What to do?

The ION2 was $16,375 (including the 1855 for a 100,000 mile warranty) with the power package, alloy wheels, and sunroof. The ION3 was $21,000 with every option EXCEPT leather and six cd changer.

You know those Saturn commercials where there are people standing in the lot and the cars are searching for their drivers? That's what happened to me.

I had been shopping for a month for a smaller SUV. After being thoroughly disappointed with my test drives and near my wits end, I decided to drive through the used lot at a local Chevy dealer. That's when I saw the wagon... not exactly the image my 24 year-old mind was looking for, but when I checked it out the deal was nothing short of perfection.

Like I said, it was in the used lot, but the odomoter read 2988 miles. :D Someone traded it in, and I got it for about $8,000-$9000 less than it was retail. I fell in love with the styling, and it just seemed right. Looking back I really feel this car was waiting to find its perfect driver, me! The clincher... it was put into service on my birth date in 2003.:D

Used with 18,273 miles from a car dealer who only sells fleet cars and lease vehicles. Mine was a GM lease car from Florida.
Pretty good deal, when I first went to see what they had, their inventory consisted almost completely of Saturn L200s from leases and Buick Park Avenues from a corporate fleet. Last time I was there, they had at least a dozen Pontiac Grand Ams. :whoa:

I bought mine new at the end of June '01 with only 3 miles on it, and a couple of those were probably my test drive miles. All of my boyfriends cars have been used and have all had problems so I don't know if I would trust buying a used car. I plan on buying my next car new as well. I just feel better knowing the history of my car and how it was driven and I wouldn't get that feeling from a used car, even with a carfax on it.

Bought my car, a 1994 SL2 in January of 1998. It had 42,000 miles on it at the time. Now it has 187,000 and is still running strong. How reliable is it? Drove it to Spring Hill last week to spend time with Charlie and the rest of the SaturnFans.com crew. 1600 mile 4 day weekend with no problems.

This is the 8th car I've driven since I got my driver's license 20 years ago. It's also been the most durable and reliable.

Last weekend, we were supposed to drive our 2001 SC2 coupe, at least until two days before leaving for Tennessee some young 25 year old lass decided to broadside the car. It only has 73,000 miles, comparatively, a rookie. (I should be picking it up from the bodyshop this week. :) ) We then decided to take my car, without even a second thought, regardless of the mileage.

THAT IS WHY I LOVE MY SATURN. HAKUNA MATATA!

Since we have owned it computer (fried)has been replaced, fuel pump (may or may not have been bad, based upon codes taken from bad computer)been replaced, radio (audio output blown)has been replaced, oil pan gasket replaced, drivers side window won't roll down now and turn signals have quit working, as have hazard lights

The first was purchased at Saturn of Huntington Beach in June 1996 and totalled about 5 months later in a not-at-fault collision. The second was purchased in December 1996 near San Jose from a private party who had inherited the car from her brother who had passed away.

Both Saturns I have owned, 1992 SL and SL2, were for lack of a stronger word, used. Thats Funny,

I just had a conversation with a friend of mine that involved buying a car used or certifide.

The word "Certifide" in the used car world, is just a Bullcrap word that somebody made up to get people to buy dealership used cars rather than private owner used cars.

In my circle of friends we all agree with the fact that when buying a used car, a person should use caution when buying from a private owner and also a dealership. A person should probably use more caution when buying from a dealership for various reasons. The dealership really has no idea who owned the car, and they can't really tell you if that person changed the oil every 3,000 miles or every 30,000 miles.
When buying from a private owner a person can use their own intuition when asking the owner questions on how they maintained the car. A person can ask the private owner for receipts of repair work done. It makes more sense buying from a private owner also because a buyer is going to pay what the car is worth, rather than a buyer usually paying more than what the car is worth at a dealership.
Just because the dealership can say that their used cars are "Certifide". They tack money onto the price because they think they can fool the public into thinking that their used cars are much better than the private owners cars.

Personally I buy from whoever has the best deal I can find. Whether it's from a dealership or a private owner. Mostly because cars are the worst investment a person can make.
My most recent Saturn purcahse was my 94 SW2. I only paid $500 at a dealership and it was'nt certified...lol.
I rebuilt the engine, put a newer transmission on it, rebuilt the suspension etc. etc. Basically I rebuilt the car entirely inside and out. I have about $4000 into it and it only took me about a year to do the bulk of the work.
I know the blue book value on my car is only $1900 if I was to sell it. But I put that much money into it with the intentions that this will be my car for the next 10 years.

Used, as a "Mechanic's Special" in an eBay auction by an auto wholesaler where it had been sitting for about a year.

Got it whipped into shape quite economically with information from this forum. If I had to pay someone else to do the work, the cost of repairs would have been hideous.

95 SL1 5m bought used [ May 2004, 116,000 miles] from an independent lot in No. Hollywood 2 days after having ridden in my brother's 95 SL1 [which he bought used] in Salt Lake City.
After my first brand new car was trashed [a 99 Cavalier 2 door], the 95 was used for several months until I went in to just "look" and take a test drive in a 2005 ION. Turned out to be my 2nd brand new car ever. Will probably be my last.
Plan was to drive the Cavalier till the wheels fell off, use the 95 to take up any slack and have inexpensive transportation for years to come. Now the ION is part of my long term transportation planning. I like it's looks more with every month that passes
If Saturn offers up any flex fuel/ "Green Line" types of small sedans, I might be persuaded to trade, but... I just scored the whole "blue bubble" trim rail and interior dress up package....... why would I ?

My 94 SL2 was a certified used.

My 2000 SL1 was new.

However any that I buy in the future will be used as I won't buy a new saturn after the 2002 SL series ended. The rebadging and designs do not do it for me.

I would love to get a nice 99 or 00 SWP though.

Well my first Saturn ( ION Quad Coupe 3 ), was new when I bought it, but my 2003 L300 was used. It only had around 24.5K miles on it though!!

I Bought my Saturn New and we have 169,000 miles on it.
Runs well, looks good inside and out. I've maintained it with regular
maintenance myself and oil changes every 3,000 miles.

I did have to replace the manual transmission at 100,000 miles but it was
my fault...I was in a huge snow storm and in an emergency situation
I "rocked" it back and forth to prevent rolling off a mountain cliff., that caused
damage to the transmission.

Because I am familiar with my SL2 I'm planning on buying a used one in the near future for my second car.
