Does the Saturn you currently drive have a sunroof?

Both my '02 SC2 and my mum's '98 SL2 have 'em. Fortunately neither car has had any problems with the roof--only rattling when cold.

Most long time board folks know, but I'll reply anyhow. I have a Webasto power sliding one in the car. Had it put in on the 'family plan' two years ago by my cousin, an aftermarket type.

I have the spoiler lip on it as well althogh it has an integrated spoiler that pops up. The look of the bubble thing is what I like and it reduces the buffeting.

Certainly worth the money. You can get one that incorporates a new headliner, but that is a couple of hundred more $$.

Well, depends. My recently purchased 93 SC2 does. But that car is totaled anyways. I just want the drivetrain. My SW2 does not. Nor do I want one, from what I have seen they are a big pain in the butt, especially for those who need the headroom.

Piney,
Despite being a member of this board longer than yourself, I didn't know you had an aftermarket sunroof. I really like it! It's kind of hard to tell in the pictures, but does it pop up and go over the roof or does it slide into the roof?

We have had sunroofs on all of our saturns but one the 92 SL (because of course the SL doesnt have that option)

Yep - it is a brand name and has steel rails. It it did not look like a factory roof from the outside, I would not have had it done. The inside is pretty decent - but I wish the trim ring was a bit darker. It has the power close stuff and memory buttons & a sliding shade too.

No way!! It is that super handy elastic thing that GM puts on 99% of all its cars for holding the registration and stuff. My wife would lose the reg if it were not hidden from her up there!!

1 VUE, 1 huge hole cut in my roof :)
Every car we have ever owned has had some sort of roof in it, with the exception of our GMC Sierra, '95 Monte Carlo, and our '86 Monte SS which had T Tops.

So does my L series. I would find it very hard for me to purchase a car if it didn't have a sun roof.

I had to have a sunroof on my new ION. In fact, I first tested the ION and the sunroof was not yet in production. I told my sales person that I would only buy one if the sunroof became available. It did, and they ordered the car I wanted with sunroof. Mine was the first ION sunroof through this dealership.
It is great in summer of course, but even in winter it allows more daylight in which makes the long Ohio winter a bit brighter.

The 1996 SL2 did, The 97 SL2 does not, the 01 L100 did not, and the 03 VUE does not.
I would of liked one in the L100, but it is not available in that trim level. I also would of liked it in the VUE, but could not wait.
My only complaint I have from a car with a sunroof is the wind noise when using a roof rack.

Yes on the VUE, I picked a sun roof before the color of the truck itself.
My wifes SC2 has a Saturn sun roof too.
My S10 has the cruddy aftermarket manual pop up sun roof.
My Camaro T Tops.
My van has the biggest sheet of sheet metal you couuld ever wax.
By the way we dont call the sun roofs around here, we call them bomb bay doors.

Nope, no sunroof in the VUE. My fathers does, and after 3 seconds of riding in that thing with the sunroof all the way open, I swore that I would never have one in mine. The Mercedes 204D does, and I do enjoy it. It's the first one I've had that I've been able to fit with room between my head and the roof. I would still fit in the VUE if it did have one.

What you experienced was normal "buffeting" of the wind. Opening up the rear windows helps this.

My Saturn Does No have one but My Galant has a nice power one.
My 02 L300 has the sunroof. I can't live without it. It's great to be able to watch airplanes go overhead.
When I bought my stripped-down 98 SC-2, the only options I wanted were AC, CD, and Sunroof. It was somewhat strange having a power sunroof but having to roll down my windows manually.

I agree with you, svbb... power sunroof with manual windows? My only stock option was the power sunroof on my 98 SL1... it was the only option I was looking for. And since running the AC kills the power big time, I love driving with it open in the spring and especially the summer with all 4 windows down...

I think mine was 330 on the family plan but they should be in the 500 range if you go to a reputable aftermarket shop.
My cousin, who did mine, does a lot of dealer work and such. Just look around or ask the dealer who does theirs. You can also call webasto or one of the aftermarket manufacturers & see who is an installer in your area.
I love my roof.

Exactly! You need a sunroof because you need to be able to look for airplanes... like the state highway patrol airplane that clocked me doing 85 in my sc2, and radioed down to the pig at the next exit to give me a ticket!
And my actually my sc2 did have a sunroof, I just wasn't using it properly (wasn't looking UP for airplanes).

My previous SL2 had a sunroof which i loved with a passion for the first few years. However, it developed a bad leak and was going to cost me around $1,000.00 to repair permanently. Prior to it trading it off for an unrelated mechanical problem with the engine, I kept on brining it into the retailer to have the drain tubes blow out at a cost of thirty minutes later. I do miss that I miss the roof on my new VUE.

I too, have a paowesunroof with manual windows and doorlocks...And in Spokane, it's usually non-rainy and gloomy, so it gets a lot of use. Lately i've had to push the little button left handed, I can't raise my right arm up high enough :) (broke my collarbone :( )
My friends like to open it an hang out and yell at other people we know...once my friend tried to flash a friend who was following us. didn't realize there was a car of teenage guys watching her :D she got back in pretty quickly.

I don't like sunroofs very much. Like some people have mentioned, they have an unfortunate tendency to leak. Also, they weaken the structure of the roof in event of a rollover - I knew somebody that died this way. They are fun to play with, but not on my car.
Jaseball
03-17-2003, 09:01 PM
I hate the idea of the sunroof breaking and paying for it. I also hate the idea of it leaking.
I really enjoy having one when it works good and being able to enjoy the stars at night and the sun in the day. I'm in California and the sunroof seems to be a good compromise against getting a convertible.
The structural integrity isn't that much of an issue for me. If you are in an accident with a roll over or multiple rollover there is a good chance you will be crushed, sunroof or no sunroof.
There may be that rare instance where not having the sunroof in a rollover saved someone life, but the chances of that is probably equal to being in the bathroom in a plane crash and being thrown to safety.
I like sunroofs, but my new VUE doesn't have one. And with all 4 windows rolled down, I don't think I need one.
93SC1
06-10-2003, 09:47 PM
Nope. I wish I did though. I once thought about getting one of those so called do-it-yourself, easy installation type things. I changed my mind when I was in a conversion shop and saw a customer bring in the results of what happens when somebody cuts the roof opening too big. No sunroofs were being made in the needed dimensions, so the shop covered it with plastic, cardboard and duct tape. The car owner was um...less than enthusiastic about the results.

I window shopped at my Saturn dealer several times over the last year before actually trading in my gold '94 SC-2 for a medium silver '99 SC-2, so I knew from talking to sales reps that they had a good aftermarket installer available (I promised myself that this time I was getting a roof.) Those who knew about the factory roof's tendancy to have problems several years down the road even told me that their installer used one with a better design. They were right. I made sure I had a sunroof included in the deal, and was very pleased with the result.
Like Piney's, mine is a Webasto, although a more basis unit than his. Yes, they did replace the headliner, and I love the result. At 5'9", headroom is not a problem for me, but I couldn't have lost much more than a fraction of an inch. Tilts up in the back, then slides back. (See good picture of it in my gallery.)
Observation:
Over the years, 90 - 100% of the stories I've heard about leaking roofs (where the leak is between the panel and the frame - not between the frame and the roof), have involved panels with some kind of frame around them. This is my 3rd sunroof (1 aftermarket manual, 1 factory manual, and 1 aftermarket power). and all of them have had frameless glass panels which seal much better against the rubber frame liner. Not one has ever leaked a drop. Any Saturn types monitoring, please feel free to pass this on to R&D.

Wcook, re-read my post above yours and think again. My experience with sunroofs goes back a number of years, and all have been positive experiences.
If you want a sunroof, you can have a sunroof. Just follow a few simple guidelines:
1. Do not attempt to install it yourself, or let your "handy around the house" brother-in-law try it.
2. Do not attempt to install it yourself (in case you weren't paying full attention when you read #1.)
3. Try to find a roof where the panel is unframed glass (see my post above for reason.) This goes for both manual and power roofs.
4. Ask around. Talk to your Saturn dealer, friends, or even a co-worker who has a good-looking roof.
5. If you get a roof, the best way to avoid leakage down the road is to clean the rubber liner which the glass is pulled against when closed. This keeps dirt from getting in between, and helps keep the rubber from drying out prematurely.
6. When you get your roof, avoid your desire to look up through it directly at the sun; instead, wait for nightfall and look at the moon.
Enjoy your roof.

I have a sunroof, unfortunately it doesn't work. :tear:
Does anyone know how much my saturn dealer (oops i mean retailer) would charge me to repair it. Just a guesstimate would be sufficient. If anyone is wondering. There is a piece within the track that's looks plastic that looks broken. I think it's what pushes the glass back.

I have never been in a car with a sunroof. I almost bought the L300 with the Premium Package when I bought my LW300. The sunroof was not a top priority for me. I just felt that in the Premium Package it was a bargain. On the other hand I really doubt if I would pay for a sunroof as a separate option. I don't think a sunroof would stop me from buying a car with it as a standard feature.

Oh...stories of sunroofs and such. Not long after I purchased my car this past December, we had a beautifully warm winter day. I decided this would be ample opportunity for me to open the sunroof and enjoy the air (as I've never had a sunroof before)...so I popped it open...not even 5 minutes after opening, I hear this "plop". I couldn't figure out what it was. I looked back and saw bird crap on the outside of my rear window. Ok-no biggie.....that is until I get out at a local gas station. I look over, and my passenger head rest has bird crap on it-the crap had ricoched (I have no clue how to spell that one) through the sunroof, onto the passenger headrest, onto the passenger rear seat and onto the INSIDE of the rear window. Oh-that was a fun one to clean up. Ugh. Not necessarily a great way to introduce me to a sunroof, but I don't think I'll be considering buying another car without it. Just gotta make sure to put some sunscreen on myself during the summer or else my nice pale german/irish/russian skin gets red as a beet!

When I was here over Christmas Break, we had 22 inches of snow fall in like 2 days. We were on the Weather Channel and everything... there was an S10 stuck in the middle of the street in front of my house for a week, and there was an AWD Vibe in our side yard for 2 days. I got back to Toledo for school, and about a week later we had 16-20 inches fall in a 2 day stretch. It was enough that I was plowing snow with my front license plate on the VUE on the way for Chinese food (snow will not stop me from getting to my General Tso's Chicken).
On that note, my VUE mirror consistently stuck on 93* when I was on the way to the bike trail earlier to go for my ride.

My Lilac 1995 SC2 has a "sliding sunroof". :usa: Not by my choice 'tho, my fiance and I bought the car used at 77000 miles. Everything was in unbelievable superb condition so I put up with sunroof. That is the only thing that is kinda damaged also, but I don't mind at all, not planning on fixing it since I've read a lot on how expensive that can be, the glass pane just pops up but won't slide open anymore (that's what it should do right?). Personally I don't like any kind of sunroof/ moonroof/ t-top.
;) BUT BEING IN PHOENIX, AZ WITH THE SUN BLAZING AS IT IS IN THE SUMMER I AM VERRRRRY HAPPY THAT IT HAS THAT COVER UNDERNEATH IT THAT SLIDES AND CLOSES THE WHOLE SUNROOF FROM THE INSIDE OF THE CAR. :D
Can't believe how many people like a sunroof... but I admire you guys, how do you do it... I would get a stinging headache if I even sat out in the sun too long, especially when without a hat. :D
Only nice thing about a glass roof, any kind, is to watch the stars at night time together with the one who loves you... :tounge:
