View Full Version : Rear Brake Cylinder

I am new to the forum and own a 2005 AWD V6 Vue. I recently had the back two wheel bearings replaced under warranty and then I am out driving, not 15 Km on the vehicle since the replacement, I apply the brakes and there is a loud bang noise and the rear passenger tire seized. When I took it back to the service center it appears the rear brake cyclinder had been torn out of the backing plate. They are scratching there heads, the metal on the backing plate is not rusted and it looks like the mounting screws had popped out of the plate. I am in need of some help here, is there anything in there replacement service that could have promoted this? It seems strange that this happens right after they serviced it. Any insight would be very appreciated. Thanks.

To me it sounds like the rear shoes where not adjusted properly after the service or something like that.....

They replaced the brake cylinders and then almost immediately after you pick up the VUE, the brake cylinders have been ripped out of the backing plate? Sounds like it's 100% all their fault. They didn't do something right.

No they did not replace the cylinders just the two rear wheel bearings.

Oops, mis-read that. Sorry.
I'm not familiar enough with the bearings on these cars to know- even though it seems like everyone has had bearing issues, mine are still fine after 63,000 miles.

Were the screws still attached to the wheel cylinder ... so as to tear holes in the backing plate?
Or were the screws missing? Sounds like a technician goofed in either case.
Were you able to drive to the shop or did you have to flat-bed?

I don't remember having to touch any brake parts when I replaced my rear hub assy. They had to leave something seriously awry to cause the shoes to lock-up so solidly that it ripped the wheel cylinder free! Another entry in the "Why I do my own car repairs" collection! Incompetence is running rampant!

It looked to me as if the screws were ripped out of the backing plate. Don't remember if they were still in the cylinder. I drove it, only about 1 km to station, very slowly, some scraping noise. The wife drove it home after it happened with another vechicle escorting her, and that would have been 2 km. They are acting like it wasn't there fault but something is fishy. It was only driven less than 20 km and this happened. I didn't show any problems before. I didn't eveen know the wheel bearings were bad until they told me. There wasn't much noise coming from them, and when the rear one in the Neon wore it was loud inside the cab.

They ended up covering the costs :)

I had sent an Email to GM about the Vue's problem and they were good enough to phone me and ask about the problem and the resolve. A nice touch.
