My 2002 VUE has developed a strange problem: the steering wheel makes a very annoying squeak and squawk when turned.:xeye: I tried spray silicone. Anybody else every heard of this?

Yes, there have been several posts about this. Some say it sounds like an angry goose, others call it a squeak.

The rubber boot that surrounds the steering rod (through the firewall) needs to be lubed.

Silicon spays or WD-40 won't stop the noise. You need a heavier weight grease.

I used a grease for packing bike hubs (Li grease). Other people have used a heavier weight oil that they can squirt into housing.

So, get your flashlight and see if you can get grease down the boot. It will slip down a bit and will allow you to spread the grease around.

Get under the dash with a spray can of lubricant containing Teflon, like 'Slick 50 1 Lube' aerosol spray, or even the thicker pump spray. Put the extension tube on the nozzle. Reach up to the boot on the steering column at the firewall and push it down as far as you can. Spray some lube in there and repeat. Clean up any overspray. The lube will eventually reach the lower section of the boot which is where the problem is.
