Anyone know what (or if ) the indication is in the VIN if a pre '06 VUE has the troublesome VTi transmission?

2006 VUE's didn't have the VTI.

Apparently I missed that.
So to answer the question then. There is no transmission identifier in the VIN.
The easiest way to ID the VTI is to look under the car at the trans is tag. It is a metal plate on the front bottom area of the VTI. If it says that the trans was made in Hungary then it is a VTI. Also keep in mind that it opnly came with the four cylinders.

I wouldn't go telling that to the Hungarians. They're some tough folks. Kinda make Vlad the Impaler look like the Avon lady. :)
There are two schools of thought:
1. The VTI is a crap design.
2. The VUE was WAY too heavy for the VTI and it was an idiotic design decision.
I think the truth is likely a combination of the above.
Cheers,
