Hopefully someone here know's more about this than I. What I want to know is how these trannies shift? What controls 5th gear gear lock up??

What I am trying to do is put a switch on the appropriate wire (whether that be the TCC valve or some other valve) to create an open circuit and not allow it to shift into 5th. I want it to remain in 4th. When towing, the intermediate setting revs the motor too high (3000 RPM @ 80 km/h) and Drive revs it too low (1500 at 80 KM/h). In 4th at 80 Km/h it truns 2000 RPM. This is one of the stupidest things they did with the tranny selector IMO.

I want to try and do this without throwing a code if possible.

Hopefully someone on here is a electrical guru, knows these trannies and works at a tranny shop and can help out! Tx,

An automatic transmission with overdrive is quite a bit more than just asking an electrical guru. Ever try to read how automatics work? Hydraulics, speed sensors, pressure control solenoids, etc.. If you did you'd appreciate how complex it really is requiring more than casual knowledge of electrical wiring. It also requires understanding hydraulics and electronics, all wedded together to follow a transmission as it shifts whether lightly loaded or dragging the house furniture on moving day. Not too many with this type of education may want to lend a hand as its complicated as it is without attempting some modification. Tried the Honda forums for anyone there with transmission expertise? There's always someone but the trick is to find him or her and being within reach on forums like Saturnfans.

Someone here attempted to modify an auto tranny for paddle shifting - no joy last we heard as it just proves there's more than meets the eye.

I'm no A/T guru ... not even close ... but I've attached two transmission electrical related drawings from the FSM.

There are some really bright Saturn folks who visit this forum ... perhaps they could look at the drawings and give you some advice.

Thanks F2G, I do have electrical schematics myself but I'm just not sure what controls 5th gear (or O.D lockup).

Fdryer, I'm not saying this tranny will be easy to mod like some other GM ones but I hate the way they did it with having either 3rd or 5th only - no 4th selection. Very stupid in my opinion!! On the old 700R4 GM trannies and such all you had to do was interrupt the brake switch wire to control the O.D lock up feature. I'm sure this one is likely not that simple..... but I thought I would ask to see if anyone had done it or knew.

Who tried that? I mean, theoretically it should be possible as it's the same one as in the Acura TL, which has a manumatic feature...

Sorry about not mentioning who tried the mod as much as it was tried on an old S-series auto for a project about a year or two ago.
