Impossible to remove roof rails, 08 VUE XR

I've been hunting down a water leak in an 08 Vue XR and it seems to be coming from the rain gutter along the roof rails. I'm trying to remove the roof rails and can't figure out how to remove the plastic covers to access the studs that hold the roof rail on.

They are studs, not bolts from the interior. There is nothing to be done on the interior.

Can anyone tell me what the trick is before I crack this plastic POS cover? Thanks!

Remove the roof panel exterior molding starting at the rear of the vehicle.
Release the six molding retainers from the body panel.
Upon installation, position the front end of the molding over the forward body panel stud.
Position the molding by aligning the other 6 retainers to the body panel studs.
Secure the molding working from the front edge to the rear by pressing firmly the molding retainers onto the body panel studs.
