View Full Version : Shimmy while braking VUE at 65mph

03 AWD v6 VUE (original owner) vibrates while braking from 65mph to about 55mph then it stops and doesn't recur until the car is stopped. I would like to fix this myself so a link to a how-to thread with pics or youtube vid would be most appreciated.

It feels like the front driver side is shimmying. I suspect the brake rotors but would like to hear from others. I bought a '96 SL2 new and under warranty they had to replace all rotors. This tells me that Saturn doesn't install the highest quality ones and may be the problem with my Vue.

The same thing happened to me a little more than a year ago, my 03 3.0L V6 had 62k miles on it, the vibration was pretty significant at highway speeds, but wasn't aweful at low speed braking. I was on vacation at the time and the vibration was significant enough at highway speed I changed the rotors while on vacation (at my families house). I changed my front rotors and brake pads and all has been well since then. (changed them July 2007).

It's definitely the rotors. Replace them with higher-quality ones.

Brake jutter- or commonly known as "warped brakes".

That was it, problem solved. long story longer, shopped for rotors, NAPA=$60 each, Autozone (duralast) $33 each. watched richpin's youtube video for replacing rotors. took maximum 30 minutes per rotor. brakes were gone after I was done, pumped them 5 times, that did it. Tested on the highway (to the dismay of the traffic behind me) and there is no more shimmy in my braking! Woo Hoo! check that off the list, moving on to the ignition switch problem. What a great site!! thanks Charlie!!!

No such word as 'jutter'. It's called 'chatter' and also applies to a clutch that shakes.

My bad. The word is judder, not jutter.

JUDDER (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=judder)

There's no 'judder' either. Again, it's 'chatter'. 'Judder' is some kind of internet word made up by imbeciles, probably right here on this forum.

Then I guess Carrol Smith and the people at Stoptech and Dictionary.com are imbeciles then.

Carrol Smith quoted at Stoptech:

If you don't know who Carrol Smith is, please stop replying to this thread unless you'd like to group yourself into that imbecile category.

And I already provided a link for the dictionary.com.

Whether or not the word was made up on the internet or not, it's become it's own word- much like LOL, google, Xerox, Kleenex or many others. Just type "judder" into a google search and see the results. Also check the different online dictionaries. It's a word. Get over it.

Just because it has a life on the internet does not make it a word. ^%$# Carrol Smith.
'If you don't know who Carrol Smith is, please stop replying to this thread unless you'd like to group yourself into that imbecile category.'
^%$# you too.

The word 'chatter' has always been used to describe the effects of runout in assemblies like brakes and clutches. It's also caused by other factors such as glazing or uneven material buildup on surfaces. In machining, it's used to describe the vibration you might experience in some cutting operations, and this is the source of it's application to automotive applications. 'Chatter' in this context was found in a 1947 Webster's, the oldest dictionary I have. Obviously no new word needs to be invented by those ignorant of the word already existing.

Judder.

Hmmm..... according to Webster's online dictionary, judder was a word in 1931. I didn't think Al Gore invented the internet until sometime in the 1980's. I guess some "internet imbecile" didn't come up with the word afterall.

Webster's definition of judder:

New pads and rotors are what you need (and apparently I need a new dictionary). Here's what I used on mine and the braking performance is noticeably better than stock:

http://www.tirerack.com/brakes/brakes.jsp?&make=Hawk&model=HPS+Street+brake+pads&group=HPS+Street+brake+pads&autoMake=Saturn&autoModel=VUE+AWD6&autoYear=2006&autoModClar=&perfCode=S

http://www.tirerack.com/brakes/brakes.jsp?&make=ATE&model=PremiumOne+Slotted+Rotor&group=PremiumOne+Slotted+Rotor&autoMake=Saturn&autoModel=VUE+AWD6&autoYear=2006&autoModClar=&perfCode=S

That's $228 + shipping for the parts. Also get some antisqueal goo (for the back of the brake pads) at your local auto parts store.

Something like this:

And don't forget to clean and re-lubricate those guide and lock pins.

And don't forget to clean and re-lubricate those guide and lock pins.

And don't forget to remove all dirt/rust from the wheel flange before mounting the rotors. I usually put a LIGHT coat of caliper grease on this surface to prevent rust.

And follow the bed in procedure specific to the brake pads you buy. Search the manufacturer's website if not included in the box. My Akebono Ceramics required 500 miles if light braking. So far, they're working great with the ATE rotors. I've got to check and see how they're wearing some time soon.

Good to see you back around wolfman!
