View Full Version : Dash Temperature Guage - Wrong

Our 2008 VUE (earlier build version... has a lock in the glove compartment) is showing 75 degrees when everything else says (including me) is in the 90's.

We've noticed it being off before, but this over 20 degrees difference.

Isn't this gauge getting the temperature from the fuel injection computer?

No.

The air temp display uses it's own sensor through the HVAC control. Depending on the operation conditions, the display may display the acutal temp or it may use a "filtered" value.

If the engine has been off for less than two hours, the temperature when the vehicle was turned off will be displayed when the ignition is turned on. This is true unless the temperature has decreased. If the temperature has decreased, it will instantly update with the actual temperature.

If the engine has been off longer than two hours, the display will instantly update when the ignition is turned on.

If the vehicle is operated at speeds of over 20 MPH, the temperature display will update at a slow rate. If you are driving below 20 MPH, it will not update. Without proper airflow, the latent heat from the engine will skew the sensor value.

If the temperature decreases, the display will always instantly update.

If you even want to manually perform an instant update, press and hold the A/C and RECIRC buttons at the same time.

It's a little quirky when you're coming from a cool location, such as a garage in the morning, into an extremely hot ambient enviornment. Remeber, while a person can quickly determine ambient temp, the sensor is in a fixed location and needs to distinguish between actual ambient temperature and latent engine heat.

Thanks MrHorspwer :D

Great response! Lots more going on there than I thought.

My main concern was the engine's FI needs to know the temperature at all times, so I assume that was the temp being displayed. If so, then the mixtures being delivered would be way off. Good to know it's not.

And Hello to everyone. I noticed this was my first post. I must have been a lurker longer than I thought.
