this is still the ONLY way to put cross bars on a 1st gen VUE. they work fine. all your questions are answered in the link you posted:

They attach to your VUE's roof rails to help support your sports gear or luggage. Your can also outfit your roof rack with the attachment you'll need to haul a bike, kayak, skis or overstuffed suitcase. Includes front and rear bar. Maximum weight 100 lbs. Includes installation kit and instructions.

your VUE has built-in rails; they just don't look like rails.

I'm interested in how this turned out. I have a 2002 Vue (AWD V-6), and the roof "appears" to be "factory ready" to receive a roof rack system. I sent an e-mail inquiry to my local Saturn Dealer, and the following is their reply:

"The roof will have to have the rails installed to accept the crossbars. According to my Parts Deprtment Manager, parts alone is approximately $800 for just the front to back rails and all hardware. This does not include labor which from my understanding is costly as the headliner needs to be dropped"
