I've got an 02 Vue with the 4-cylinder 5-spd. I have a 30 mile one-way commute to work, with 25 miles of it is on a freeway with a 70 mph speed limit. Traffic is light in my direction, so the freeway commute is typically at 70+ mph.
With the 5-spd, I suspect my gearing is around 4.10. I'm due for a new set of tires, and I was looking at installing a set of 215/75-16s, which are about 3/4" larger diameter than the stock 215/70-16 tire.
The tire store told me they would not install a larger tire because it could cause the check engine light to come on and throw off codes. The manager said the ABS system monitored the wheel speed, and if that didn't agree with the engine speed, the check engine light would come on.
I'm not buying that, because the wheel sensor measures the number of rotations and calculates the vehicle speed based on the assumed tire diameter. I know going to a larger tire will throw the speedometer off by about 3%, but I'm OK with that.
Is anyone aware of any issues in going to a 3/4" larger diameter tire? The width will remain exactly the same.
Thanks,
Mike
