O.K, I've done numerous searches (probably not using the right word combination or something!) and could not find this answer. What is the volume of the Transfer case?? I have an 05 AWD w/3.5L.

The engine - 4.5q
The RDM - 750 ml
The transmission - appox 4.2-4.5q
Transfer case - ??

The owners manual lists the type of fluid to use but it neglects to mention the capacity.

I know someone on here will know this. Thanks

0.45 quarts according to the service manual.

That's all? Holy crap 1/2 a quart is not much at all.

I'm planning on using Amsoil 75W-90 synthetic oil in the TC and Royal Purple Synchromax in the RDM. Anyone else use these in either application? Anyone have any issues? I read in another post during a search that someone on here was using RP Synchromax with great results. It says it replaces the GM #12378514. I'm not paying $90 Canadian for 1 liter of Versatrac fluid (yes $45 per 500ml Canadian $$$$ at the GM dealer)!!! Ridiculous!

I've had better luck with Versatrak fluid vs Royal Purple in the RDM.
Lasts twice as long before the noises return(recall not done).

I don't have any noises from the RDM. Mines an 05 so it likely has the new design RDM already in it. For the price of that Versatrac fluid I can change it in the RDM about 8 times with the RP.

I know there was at least one member on here that uses it with great results. Anyone else have any experience with the RP Synchromax?

So it's only 1/2 quart in the TC, eh....
75W-90 amsoil gear oil? That's what I'm looking at putting in....

Saturn calls it the 'power take-off unit' or something similar - may help you find out more. They don't have a service interval for it since all it has in it is a gear set to change the axis of rotation 90 degrees - the rear propeller shaft is always powered, so there's no clutching or disengagement in it. Unless the oil leaks out, which would indicate a mechanical repair, they don't speak of changing it. With all that, I think long-term owners who can do simple jobs like this would be well-advised to change all fluids including brake fluid when the vehicle gets about five years old. I've been thinking of the RP Synchromax for the PTU and RDM myself but haven't made the decision whether to use it or Versatrak oil.

Que?

The MY06 owners manual has a service interval. It's under the "Additional Required Services" section, in the table. Severe service is 25,000 miles. Normal is 100,000 miles.

What is an 'MY06' owner's manual?

Well the TC gear lube from GM is not that big of a deal because:
1) it's synthetic
&
2) it's not that expensive ($16 CDN for 1 liter bottle) unlike the $90/L for the Versatrac fluid!

So I will use the GM oil in the TC for those reasons. The RDM will get RP. Which TC does the 3.5L AWD have? The MJ8 or the NVG900? It would be great if it was the NVG because I do business with them so if I EVER needed a transfer case then I know where to get one!
