View Full Version : Need advice on how to trouble shoot electrical problem

I just did an engine swap on a 2003 VUE 2.2L AWD automatic.

I have everything "all hooked up" - but it blows the ecm/tcm 10 amp fuse when I apply power by hooking up the battery.

After some head scratching, I eliminated all the connections to one. If the engine oil pressure switch (EOP) is left unplugged, the fuse won't pop - but of course, the engine won't start.

I checked continuity along the wire (light brown / black) and when the wiring harness is unplugged, it doesn't show a short to ground.

SO, I'm stumped. Electrical is not my strong point (can you tell)?

I'd buy a replacement engine wiring harness if I knew that would fix it, but I hate spending money without some assurance of the outcome.

Suggestions?

Thanks, in advance.

Kim

Sooo, after a weekend of head scratching I finally figured out where I went wrong.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT - I switched the ECM with the TCM.

Once I swapped them back - Vahroom!

It started first try. Now, this begs the question?

Two, actually:

1) how could I be so stupid to get them reversed?

2) why wouldn't Saturn Engineers (GM, actually) key the computer connectors so that they can't be reversed.

But, the happy news is I now have a 2003 VUE 2.2L Automatic with a 15,000 mile engine and transmission. It runs great. Drives much nicer than my V6 VUE.

Thanks

(I hope this little confession is helpful to someone else)

Cool, nice work...to answer your questions:

1) how could you be so stupid - think about how many things you hooked up on this job and you messed up 2...not bad in my book

2) Why wouldn't GM engineers...... - because they're engineers...
