Before you bought your first Saturn, did you own an import or domestic vehicle? What vehicle did you own? Which Saturn did you buy to replace it?
Post your thoughts.
Thanks,
Charlie
Here is my list. I have never owned an import and likely never will, well not a Japanese or Korean one anyway. A German car is about the only non-domestic kind I'd ever own, specifically BMW.
1. 1987 Plymouth Reliant; burgandy; 4-door 2.2L (I still have it)
2. 1989 Dodge Aries; burgandy; 4-door(parts)
3. 1986 Plymouth Horizon; grey; 4-door 1.6L
4. 1986 Dodge Aries; white; 2-door; 5-spd (parts)
5. 1987 Dodge LeBaron; dark burgandy; turbo (parts)
6. 1985 Chevy S-10; flat black w/cheap chrome illusion flames; ext. cab; short box; 2WD; 2.8L (I still miss driving it :( )
7. 1989 Chevy S-10; black; reg cab; long box; 2WD; 2.8L (parts)
8. 1993 GMC Sonoma; black; ext. cab; short box; 4WD; 4.3L
9. 1989 GMC 1500 burgandy; reg. cab; long box; 4.3L (parts)
10. 1997 Kawasaki Ninja ZX9R; green (never rode it)
11. 1990 Buick Regal GS; white; 3.1L
12. 2002 Saturn SC1; Silver.
13. 2004 Chevrolet Silverado Z71 4x4; black; ext. cab; standard box; 4.8L
The ones in bold I had more than just a few months and acutally consider mine. The rest were short lived, or I never even drove them any distance further than my driveway.
I'm 25, been driving since 17, the K-car was mine on July 4th 1999, and so it went on from there.

My first Saturn was the 1991 SL2, 5-speed with the spiral wheels, in 1991 and it was purchased to replace a 1988 VW Golf 4dr, 5-sp.
Prior to that I'd had a 1985 VW Golf, 2dr, 5sp.
Prior to that I'd had a 1984 Trans Am, auto
Prior to that I'd had a 1978 Toyota Celica GT coupe 5-speed
Prior to that I'd had a 1983 Honda Accord LX 4dr, 5-speed
Prior to that I'd had a 1978 Honda Accord CVCC hatchback, 5-speed
Prior to that I had a Puch MaxLux! <--- chick magnet!!

Saturn #1 replaced a dark blue 1988 Chevy S-10 EL. It had the ancient Iron Duke 2.5L 4-cylinder mated to a 5-speed manual whose throws between gears were about as long as the shifter was tall. It also sounded like a school bus when I engaged the a/c - all sound and very little movement. To its credit, it hauled my mountain bike very well.

Before I bought my first Saturn (an aquamarine 1993 SL1), I had a 1992 Pontiac Lemans for 6 months, which was a pretty good car.
I'm having a hard time voting, considering the Lemans was an American nameplate designed in Germany, and built in South Korea.

My 1992 Nissan Sentra was my divorce car. My ex only drove imports and passed it on to me. Ever since my first Saturn, that's all I drive and will drive.

66 Mercury Caliente 2 dr. Hardtop w/ Earl Scheib Avacado Green paint, trans went , still in College couldn't afford to fix it
65 Dodge Monaco 2 dr hardtop. Bought because of bus strike. Sold it twice. The first couple brought it back because they couldn't afford to keep gas in it.
2nd guy was going to paint it blue and name it Brenda:eek:Got a thing from the DMV saying it was going to be sold at auction fopr storage fees. The guy never put it into his name.
63 Plymouth Valiant Signet 2 dr hardtop 3 speed manual. Still have it
84 Citation II 2 door notch back, which I still miss: metallic beige & dark brown 2 tone, mag wheels, pretty car, perfect size, plenty of room inside, "First Chevy of the 80s" Iron duke and Hydramatic. Traded for:
86 Olds Calais 2 dr. Iron Duke [oops "Tech IV"] and Hydra [just love saying that, just like my Grandfather and tales of his 56 Pontiac.
Gave to parents who gave to my little brother who is still driving it, still gets comments on it's nice condition.
99 Cavalier: first brand new car, the one closest to my Citation in size and shape and space in the Chevy lineup. 2.2 and auto, never went wrong. Rear ended by a BMW
95 SL1 5M: bought after I rode in bro's 95 SL1 in Salt Lake City. Had to have one myself. Found it in No. Hollywood with 116,000 miles a clean Car Fax and one owner.Paid for with a credit card. Not the best idea, but got it down to 2.9%. I told you I had to have it !!;)
Grateful for it after the Cavalier was murdered, [and still have it]got me around till I bought
05 ION 1 Auto. The 95 was so good at 116,000 miles, I thought this would be a great choice, though I hated them when they came out. Currently has 26,000 miles. It makes for a nice pair of Saturns in the drive way.

I hope to be back in the Saturn fold in the future as I do miss the SL2 and my brother and mother are still in Saturn's orbit (they've stepped up to ION and VUE from their S-Series). (No buyer's remorse on the Maxima, though, it's a sharp car). For my next Saturn experience, I'm just as likely to consider pre-owned/late-model as brand new.

The first car I had was my parents 1984 Chevy Caprice Classic station wagon. Chocolate brown w/ a chocolate brown interior. Terrible, but I was 16 so I didn't care.
Next was a 86 Chevy 4X4. 12mpg. More than doubled my gas mileage when I picked up my 98 SC2.

I drove a 1993 Toyota Tercel before I bought my first Saturn a 1998 SL2., which I bought brand new.
I still own and drive that car today.
Last month I purchased a used 2004 2.2L 5 speed Manual VUE.
Before the SL2 I drove many cars over the years before. I don't own these anymore:
1977 Dodge Aspen,--couldn't sink this slant 6 engine
1962 Chevy Bel-air, had a 283 Engine, my mother totalled it
1965 Buick Special--given to a relative-was in a flood and still ran 350K miles
1986 Chrysler Laser,---Nice car, Should have kept it.
1987 Plymouth Horizon,--a piece of junk
1987 Plymouth Sundance--another lousy chrysler product.
1991 Toyota Corolla--great car, I shouldn't have sold it.
1993 Toyota Tercel--at 300K miles I traded it in when I bought the 98 Sl2

My teenage car was a white 2-door 1967 Chevelle; then I drove a 1978 Buick Skylark for many years until I'd sunk so much money into it, I realized I had to sell it, which I did and about a month later the engine blew up. I took very good care of that old Buick but it couldn't help it, it was old and had lots of mileage on it. I loved that old jalopy. My first-ever-in-my-middle-aged-life brand new off-the-lot car was a 1998 SL2 in a midnight blue color. I now drive a 2004 Ion 3, electric blue, which I bought used.
Purchased a 2004 VUE, traded in a 2000 Olds Intrigue.
Traded the 2004 VUE in on a 2005 Titan Crew Cab.
Traded the 2005 Titan in on a 2006 Titan Crew Cab.
Traded the 2006 Titan in on a 2008 VUE.
What did I do for a living for 35 years?
I was a Ford partsman.
But my family owned an Olds dealership for many years.
btw: Bought my first car in 1956: 1936 Lincoln Zephyr.
Owned over 300 cars/trucks since. Only 15 were purchased new.
You got it...I'm old.

Domestic 1989 Buick LeSabre. Drove it into the ground and that took some doing.
Others that my father owned and that I was thus exposed to:

1986 Lada 2106
1979 VW Golf Diesel
1986 AMC/Renault Alliance

Wow, difficult question... hmm... I just gave up my 1990 Honda Accord with 156K miles on it and got a [generous] $150.00 for my lovely trade-in.
I also own a 2003 Chrysler Town & Country van. Guess i'd answer import.
I've had quite a few cars... it's fun to think back on... let me see....
1979 Chrysler LeBaron (V8 and seats 8 with a squish)
1974 Ford Mustang II (I may be wrong on the year; i'm getting feeble here)
1989 Dodge Omni (bought new for same price I just bought my Ion for)
1992 Toyota Corolla
1996 Dodge Caravan
I believe that's the damages so far. Yeah, a small list compared to many, but still lots of fun and crazy (my Flintstones Mustang where the passenger could run and push the car while still seated... okay, almost ;) )
Hope you're all having a good day,
Steve
Oh, by the way, I HATE these live ads that exist over links in our posts!!!!
Replaced my 92 Mercury Topaz (two door sport model with spoiler) for the 01 L200. That Topaz was the best car in the world. It took everything and kept going and going.... It took me all over the country and back again too.
My list of cars:
82 Buick LeSabre. It was HUGE and FAST!!
88 Ford Taurus This one was junk!
88 Ford Bronco (the fullsize one) Went everywhere.
89 Plymouth Sundance
This is where the Topaz comes in.
Also drove a 95 Ford Ranger for a short time during the Topaz era.
Now have the 01 L200 (almost 100,000) and a 95 Dodge Dakota (over 150,000 and runs great)
Will be keeping these two. L200 will become husbands work car to save gas and Dakota will be the winter work truck for him.
I will be getting an Outlook this summer.

If I was still back in Russia this could have been a little pet project to restore and mod one of those... A very masochistic pet project - I still remember having to pull the alternator apart for the fourth time and the gas powered heater (air-cooled engine ;) ) that hardly ever worked. Those cars may be the reson why people think Russian winters are cold ;)
Interestingly, many people back in Russia consider Saturn the equivalent of a ZAZ (for lack of more info perhaps) - quirky, cheap, unpopular, but not without appeal.

I've only owned and WILL only own domestic vehicles. My last ride, a 1995 Buick Park Avenue, was basically a hand-me-down from a relative. My '96 Ranger needed some work which my wife and I couldn't afford to put into it at the time, so we sold it and bought the P/A from my grandparents really cheaply.
It was a good car for the most part, though it had an oil leak when we got it that we were never able to get fixed. We spent $1,400 twice to have various parts replaced -- it would fix the leak here, then start a new one over there. Finally, when they told us the only thing left to look at was going to be a repair of at least $2,000, we left it alone and began feeding it more oil than gasoline. In January, the engine began needing 4 or 5 quarts a DAY on a Friday, then seized up and died altogether on a Monday. So long, Buick.
My new-to-me Vue, I have to say, is absolutely my favorite vehicle I've ever owned. In fact, the only other vehicle I've driven which was more fun to drive was an '07 Ion rental car we had a year or so ago -- that thing was an absolute go cart! It's absolutely the reason my wife and I started looking at Saturns when it was time to replace the Buick.
Hey, Guys!! long time no visit - been busy.
Have to comment IMNSHO bad poll questions. The stated question was "Before you owned your first Saturn" the poll asked "you first car". Not the same. My "first car" and the one before my first Saturn and the one before my current Saturn are all different.
BTW:
1979 on - I'm sure you don't care prior to coming to the US from UK - anyway I don't, so tough ;-)
Some may appear to be odd choices, but there were good reasons and they all worked well in the circumstances.

i have a 200sx ser with a sylvia s15 blue bird swap. Its a great car for an import. But im not a fan of imports. My saturns motor outlasted and still is my nissan's original motor by 30k. although its way easier to find mods for the nissan

Well the list grows now that I have my Aura:
2007 Saturn Aura XE
2004 Saturn Ion 3 Special Edition
1992 Chevrolet Lumina Euro 3.1L V6
Cars I "flipped" (bought cheap, fixed, cleaned, sold for profit) to make money prior to having a license.
1991 Mercury Topaz GS
1996 Ford Escort Wagon
1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais 4dr. (This was supposed to be my first car.. but I sold it instead.)

Never owned an import. Not that I wouldn't buy one; just haven't seen too many that I either liked or felt were worth it. If I did but one, Hyundai and Honda's would be toward the top of my list; but I'd certainly consider a Jag S-type R or XKR if I could afford one.
1. 1977 Buick Regal, 350 Buick V8 (12 MPG beating it / 15 MPG babying it) -just had to beat it!
2. 1981 AMC Spirit, 2.5L Pontiac. 4-spd, 3.08 posi (28 MPG) W/ posi, fishtail & Donut time!
3. 1989 Chevy Cavalier RS, 2.0L Chevy (22-24 MPG) <- beating it!
4. 1990 Pontiac Sunbird coupe, 2.0L OHC (24 MPG City, 36 MPG HWY) <- beating it!
5. 1999 Ford Ranger XLT Sport, 3.0L flex-fuel, 5-spd (22 City, 28 MPG HWY) <- beating it!
6. 2001 Ford Ranger edge, 3.0L, 5-spd (20 MPG City, 26 MPG HWY)
7. 2001 Ford Taurus, 3.0L (26 MPG HWY)
8. 2001 Ford Ranger XLT, 2.5L, 5-spd (averaged about 22 MPG)
9. 2003 Ford Focus ZTS w/ sport pkg. 2.3L, auto (ave. 22 MPG)
10.2003 Ford Ranger XLT, supercab, 4.0L, 4WD, AEM-CAI, JBA-cat back, Jet-chip, (ave. 13-16 MPG) <- had to beat the snot out of it, just too much fun! Ever see one of these slowing down for a red light; nail the gas, downshifts to second, engine snaps wide open, whole truck starts to launch, tires (32x10x16's) break loose, and tail starts nice little wiggle (as long as it wasn't wet). Too much fun! ...and now you see why only 13 mpg. Though stock was little better, and much less enjoyable.
11.a. 2005 Saturn Vue, V6, FWD - My wife's! (26 MPG HWY)
11.b. 2004 Saturn Vue, V6, FWD - Mine (ave. 20 MPG City)
12. 2004 Saturn Vue Redline, AWD - (first tank appears to have been 18 MPG, mostly short commute to work, and hard on the pedal)

both for me
first car was a 72 VW Bug that everyone called mine but was my parents car
first car bought was a 77 Datsun 280Z which tops the fun list but was always having problems with
then:
88 Chevy Celebrity 4dr which got me where I needed to go
95 Honda Civic 4dr (given to me by my grandma when she quit driving) sold after bad luck with the car though it got me across the country and back
83 Chevy C10 as I always wanted a truck but ended up being a major POS
then got the 93 SL2 which my mom actully won off ebay a year ago and have only had a few things I've needed to do but all have been minor and to be expected at some point

Here are the cars I have owned.
1987 Buick Century. Good car, but no rust protection. Literally rusted away one winter.
1994 Saturn SL2. Best Saturn I have owned. Trouble free 100k miles. Some issues after that, but nothing major.(Alternator, water pump). Car totaled.
1997 Plymouth Breeze. Worst car I have ever owned. Period. 3 Head gasket failures in 2 years. $1500 per head gasket replacement. Cut my losses and ran.
1998 Nissan Altima SE. Hands down the most reliable car I have ever driven. Bought used with 30k on it. Eight years later it had 186k miles, and never left me stranded. Nothing broke either, just normal maintenance. Very cheap to own and maintain. Dealer parts (window switches, I broke them while removing the door panel) were very cheap. My local dealer also split the cost of TSB updates past the warranty. Timing chain broke just shy of 200k, mechanic friend made cash offer I could not refuse.
2001.5 VW Passat GL. Owned car for a few weeks, previous owner did not believe in oil changes. Motor pretty sludged up. Needed new turbo and oil pump. Dealer bought car back. I just pictured that car being a headache.
2003 L300. Ok car, but very pricey to repair. Parts prices make VW/Audi look cheap. I was surprised to find GM still having assembly (oil cooler cover, short lived thermostats) problems with the V6 after 9 years in production. I was also shocked to find that Saturn expects me to pay full price for TSB's after warranty. I was expecting them to stand behind their products more.
Would I buy a Saturn again? Hard to say. I really liked the Astra, but it is pricey. The Aura is nice, but has the typical GM hard shiny plastics inside, which seems to cheapen the feel. If in the next year or two, GM gets it's act together and stops treating their customers like victims, and can stop the massive production issues (cam failures anyone, BCM?) then yes a new GM product may be in my garage.

1995 Nissan Sentra coupe (lowered stiff, struts, with falcon tires. amazing in the corners. drove it into the back of a civic, rebuilt the whole front end and a few months later had to get rid of it because the frame was bent) turned into a "what if" car, like what if i drove to work in second gear the whole way... what if i took the header off and ran it for a bit with no exhaust at all.... those kinds of things that you always wondered but were afraid to do....
1995 Nissan Sentra coupe (bought it to fix the other car)
2007 Ion2 (love it)
