Were you stopping at the time? Tires can slip on dry pavement, too. The ABS doesn't know if it's wet or icy, just that a wheel locks under braking, and it attempts to control it. You can get ABS turning off the highway into a paved entrance if you go in a little hot. This would usually be the right rear wheel.

If you weren't stopping, or are SURE that there was no tire-lockup.... Then I'd have to say one of your wheel speed sensors is going south.

Yes, this can happen on dry pavement. The ABS can also be triggered if the wheel hits a bump or pothole while braking with enough force. The ABS also does a quick self-test after taking the car out of park.

When my S-Sat sits for weeks at a time (and the rotors rust up) I usually get some ABS chatter on the first couple of stops. A good hard stop or two always clears it up. Not sure exactly what the cause is.
