View Full Version : Too much coolant in the tank?

Is there such a thing as too much coolant in the surge tank? Save for the time I had a gasket leak a while back, the coolant level was always about 1/4 to 1/2 inch above the tank's center seam. That's well above the cold fill line. I noticed after my service visit two months ago, there was a LOT more coolant in the tank than when I took it in. So much, in fact, that the coolant level is practically covering the entrance to the return line at the top of the tank.

Is this a potential problem waiting to happen? Something tells me I should siphon off the excess to give the coolant more expansion room in the tank.

I would siphon it off to the correct level, just so its where it belongs...don't think you'll have any problems if you leave it there but why not just get it to the proper level...

It would not be a bad idea. If there's less area for gases from evaporating coolant to go, it could put excess pressure on the system. Just take some out to the line then you'll be GTG!
