Hello All,

Do I have the drain & fill locations right on the attached picture?

Thanks,
John

No- at least not for the fill location. I'm not 100% positive that you have the drain location right either. It's been awhile since I changed my getrag's fluid, but the drain location is bolt in the lowest part of the transmission- what you have in that picture "might" be right.

The fill location is on a top surface somewhere so you can put a funnel in it and pour the fluid in.

What you'll also need to do is jack up and remove the driver front wheel. You may also need to remove the splash guard (but I don't think so). Then on the side of the transmission, there will be a screw/bolt that you'll need to remove. This is the INSPECTION hole. As you fill the transmission with fluid from the top, you know you have enough when fluid starts to come out of this hole (no joke!).

If you'd like, I can take some pics or scan my Service Manual tonight or this weekend sometime.

THANKS - if you could post pics or scans from the service manual that would be great - appreciate the help!

How many miles did you have on yours when you changed it and what fluid did you use? I know its Dexron III, did you use syn and did you notice a difference?

Thanks in advance,
John

I filled it with some kind (the appropriate kind- just don't remember) of Red Line synthetic fluid. The shifting action was still smooth even in very cold temps.

Mileage wise? Uh.... don't remember. It was about 2 years ago that I did it. I would say probably mid-20,000 miles or so. I think I have about 47,000 on it now.

The picture you gave has the right drain point the fill is not there on the GM Getrags. This diagram has the GM drain and fill points.

The fluid is supposed to be checked when the trans is cold.

Thanks ssicarman!!!!!

I guess it takes a little finesse and a flexible funnel to fill these things...

I really appreciate your help

You're welcome.
Check an auto parts store for a suction gun. Basicly a metal tube with a pull handle on it that will suck up fluid through a hose when the handle is pulled out. Push handle back in and the fluid comes out.

Man- I totally don't remember having to use a flexible tube to fill my transmission. Which side of the transmission is that fill hole on? The outside (wheel side) or inside (engine side)? I swore I did mine from the top- but it's been a long time and I've been working on different cars since then.

I didn't get a chance to take any pictures this weekend. It snowed here and consequently the VUE is filthy as well as the garage. I just couldn't bring myself to get down and play in that crap.
