My sister was driving the car and spun out in the wet.... (stalled engine, then immediately restarted)
With the restart it went into limp-home mode.
I'm assuming the ECM got terribly confused when the engine died (manual transmission so it stalled), and thus the limp-home mode with an immediate restart (no turning the key off).
Upon a full off/on cycle (key out) it was no longer in limp-home mode (but the engine light stayed on, but even that's gone away after 3-4 restarts).
So if you stall out and go into limp-home mode, take the key out....
